Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse - CVICU

Location: Columbus, Ohio
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Work schedule includes weekdays and some weekends with rotating holidays.
  • Required to float within units of equivalent or lower acuity.
  • Shift options: 36 hours per week, Day/Night rotating or Night shifts.
  • Up to 6 weekend shifts per 4-week schedule (Saturday/Sunday for dayshift, Friday/Saturday for nightshift).
  • No on-call required.
  • Travelers will not be rotated more than once every 4 weeks.
  • Patient ratios approximately 1:1 to 1:2.

Required Experience & Skills

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Ohio.
  • Minimum of 2 years of CVICU experience, with at least some experience within the last year.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
  • Proficient in ventilator management.
  • Skilled in Swan-Ganz catheter management.
  • Experience with conscious sedation.
  • Knowledge of balloon pumps.
  • Experience managing pulmonary artery (PA) lines.
  • Experience with Epic electronic health record system.

Required Certifications & Licenses

  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license valid in Ohio.
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification.
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification.
  • Other certifications may be required depending on unit (e.g., PALS, NRP, NIH Stroke Certification) — verify per unit specifics.

Background & Compliance Requirements

  • 7-year criminal background check within 90 days of start, including FBI and state fingerprinting (BCI/FBI) with specific Ohio codes.
  • Monthly monitoring through EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG databases.
  • Education accreditation verification from an accredited nursing program (CCNE, ACEN, or NLN CNEA).
  • Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug test within 3 months of start.
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming good health and free of contagious disease.
  • Immunizations and health documents required:
    • Tdap vaccine (adult dose after age 11/12)
    • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year
    • TB questionnaire
    • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccination or positive titer
    • Hepatitis B titer or vaccine series (declination acceptable)
    • Varicella vaccination or positive titer (medical exemptions reviewed)
    • Seasonal flu vaccine or declination during flu season (10/1 - 3/31)
  • COVID-19 vaccination not required but strongly recommended.

Competency & Testing Requirements

  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam required prior to start.
  • Unit-specific competency exams required.
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required within 1 year of start and updated annually (exceptions apply based on unit).
  • Orientation safety manual acknowledgment required annually.

Additional Requirements

  • Two professional references required; at least one must be from a manager or formal leadership.
  • Employment application required including education verification.
  • Skills checklist required.
  • Dress code and hand hygiene policy acknowledgment required.
  • Fraud, waste, and abuse training certificate required prior to start and updated annually.
  • Confidential compliance reporting mechanism form acknowledgment required.

Work Environment & Notes

  • Estimated patient ratios are 1:1 to 1:2, indicating a high-acuity critical care environment.
  • Floating within similar or lower acuity units may be required.
  • No call responsibilities.
  • Parking options available but at candidate’s expense.
