Registered Nurse (RN) – Medical-Surgical Telemetry Float Pool

Location: Centennial, Colorado
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights
Hours: 12-hour shifts, approximately 36 hours per week

Job Overview

• Float nurse position covering multiple facilities within a 60-mile radius zone centered around Colorado Springs, CO.
• Must be able to float to various hospitals and units within the zone; no home base facility.
• Units include a range of specialties: Medical-Surgical Telemetry, Cardiac, Neuro, Oncology, Rehab, Renal, Bariatrics, Orthopedics, Trauma, Emergency Department Observation.
• Nurse-to-patient ratios typically 1:5-6 depending on patient acuity.
• Schedules are released 4–6 weeks in advance and may be either:

  • Assigned to a single facility for the week with possible intra-facility floating, or
  • Just-In-Time (JIT) assignments given 1–2 hours before shift start.

Patient Population

• Adult to geriatric patients.
• Common diagnoses include cardiac, neurological, orthopedic, oncology, renal, urology post-surgical, general surgery post-appendectomy, gynecology, psychiatric/detox, ENT, general medicine, and stable long-term placement patients.

Required Qualifications

• Minimum 2 years of Medical-Surgical Telemetry nursing experience.
• Prior neurological experience preferred.
• Current RN license valid in Colorado.
• Certifications required:

  • BLS (Basic Life Support) – AHA
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) – AHA
  • NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)

Clinical Responsibilities

• Ability to titrate heparin drips.
• May be assigned as charge nurse; charge nurse typically does not take patient assignments unless necessary.
• Work alongside nurse aides.
• Experience with respiratory therapy equipment such as vents, CPAP, BiPAP is expected.

Scheduling & Work Expectations

• 7 pm to 7 am night shifts.
• 6 to 9 weekend shifts required within a 6-week schedule.
• May be required to participate in holiday rotations.
• Rare call or standby requirements, usually only during low census.
• Must submit all time-off requests prior to starting the assignment.
• Flexibility required to fill gaps in permanent scheduling.

Floating & Travel Requirements

• Must float within the entire zone covering multiple hospitals up to 60 miles apart.
• Responsible for securing housing that allows feasible travel to all facilities in the zone.
• First float assignment communicated by or before the Monday start date.
• Floating may include various acuity levels: ICU (low acuity holds), PCU/Stepdown, and Medical-Surgical Telemetry units.

Orientation

• Clinicians must be in-state for the week of orientation, even if some modules are completed remotely.

Additional Notes

• No designated home base facility; must be prepared to work at any facility within the zone.
• Schedules are created by leadership and are not self-scheduled.
• Charge nurses are designated on each unit; night shift charge nurses more commonly take small patient assignments.

This position is ideal for experienced Medical-Surgical Telemetry RNs who are flexible, enjoy varied clinical experiences, and are comfortable floating across multiple facilities within a defined geographic zone.
