Description
Registered Nurse (LDRP)
Location: Bismarck, North Dakota
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights
Hours per Day: 12
Hours per Week: 36
Unit Overview
- Labor, Delivery, Recovery, Postpartum (LDRP) unit with:
- 7 Labor & Delivery beds
- 12 Postpartum beds
- 8 Surgical beds
- 1 dedicated C-Section OR suite and 2 GYN surgical ORs
- 3-bay triage area (average 17 patients/month)
- Approximately 643 births annually
- Nurse-to-patient ratios follow AWHONN guidelines:
- L&D: 1:1-2
- Postpartum: 1:2-3 for couplets, 1:3-4 for surgical/medical patients
Patient Population & Common Diagnoses
- Obstetric patients including L&D, antepartum, triage, postpartum
- High-risk pregnancy conditions such as:
- Magnesium sulfate therapy
- Preeclampsia
- Gestational hypertension and diabetes
- Accept patients 23+ weeks gestation
- Postpartum vaginal and C-section deliveries
- Surgical patients including hysterectomy, bladder repairs, mastectomies
- Occasional higher-risk patients (no cardiac interventions)
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 3 years of LDRP nursing experience
- Current BLS certification
- AWHONN Intermediate Fetal Monitoring certification (advanced preferred)
- NRP and STABLE certifications required
- Ability to titrate drips including Pitocin, magnesium sulfate, and occasional insulin
- Comfortable with first-time travel nurses expected to integrate quickly
- Ability to scrub in for surgeries preferred
Clinical & Operational Details
- Charge nurse present each shift and participates in deliveries (travelers do not take charge)
- Support staff includes 1 OB scrub tech (M-F days), unit clerk, and occasional nurse techs (students)
- OB and Neonatologist on call 24/7; Neonatal Nurse Practitioner overnight
- Anesthesia available in-house 24/7
- Supplemental oxygen available; RNs troubleshoot but do not manage respiratory equipment
- Remote telemetry capable unit; RNs expected to place telemetry patches correctly and read telemetry strips in Phase 1 recovery for C-sections
- Electronic fetal monitoring system: GE/Corometrics models
Scheduling & Work Environment
- Rotational shifts: 7a-7p and 7p-7a
- Schedule posted 6 weeks in advance with consideration for sleep schedules and block scheduling
- Weekend work required every third weekend
- Holiday shifts as needed
- No mandatory call or standby; optional overtime available
- Floating opportunities to Pediatrics, NICU (feeder-growers), Med/Surg, PCU, ICU, ED, Psych units as sitter or support staff
- Surgical scrubs provided
Orientation & Additional Information
- Unit-specific orientation: 2 shifts of 12 hours each
- High patient satisfaction in the department
- Return to office (RTO) required within 7 days of contract start; no additional RTO approvals
- Radius restriction: candidates must live within 50 miles and cannot hold other positions with certain affiliated healthcare systems
This position is ideal for experienced LDRP nurses comfortable with a fast-paced, high-acuity obstetric environment and flexible scheduling.
