Description
Registered Nurse (RN) – CCU
Location: Carroll, Iowa
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights
Hours: 12-hour shifts, 36 hours per week
Unit Overview
- 6 beds set up for CCU-level patients; may flex to MedSurg Peds as needed
- Nurse-to-patient ratio goal: 1:2 (may be up to 1:4 depending on acuity and MedSurg Peds needs)
- Charge Nurse oversees both MedSurg Peds and CCU sides; typically no patient caseload but may take assignments during high census or staffing shortages
- No in-house hospitalist or intensivist; patients managed by private physicians; ER doctor attends emergencies/codes
- Respiratory Therapist coverage during weekdays only; nights and weekends CCU nurses manage respiratory treatments and equipment
- No Tele/Monitor Techs; CCU nurses monitor telemetry and cannot leave area without coverage (usually House Supervisor)
Patient Population & Common Diagnoses
- CHF, Pneumonia, COPD, Sepsis, DKA
- Occasionally central line insertions, thoracentesis, paracentesis performed by providers
Required Certifications & Licenses
- Iowa RN License
- BLS (AHA)
- ACLS (AHA)
Preferred Certifications:
- TNCC
- NIHSS
- PALS
Experience Requirements
- Minimum 3 years of CCU experience
- Prior travel experience required (at least 1 year)
- Charge nurse experience required
Clinical Responsibilities
- RN responsible for titrating drips (e.g., Cardizem, insulin, norepinephrine)
- Must be able to float to MedSurg Peds unit; cross-training opportunities available for Behavioral Health and ER
Scheduling & Work Environment
- 6-week cyclic schedule with attempts to accommodate scheduling needs; no guaranteed block scheduling
- Weekend requirement: every third weekend (Fri/Sat/Sun), flexible to Sat/Sun/Mon if needed
- Holiday requirement: 1 major and 1 minor holiday depending on season and contract duration
- Two 15-minute breaks and one 30-minute lunch per 12-hour shift; House Supervisor covers breaks/lunches
- Scrub colors allowed: Grey, Black, Pink, or White (any combination)
Orientation & Additional Notes
- Unit-specific orientation: two 12-hour shifts
- Must participate in unit quality projects and initiatives
- Med drawer keys are limited and must be signed out/in each shift; replacement fee applies if lost
- Positive work culture; expected to engage and contribute to team environment while allowing for personal grace on off days
Equipment & Support
- Respiratory equipment includes CPAP, Bipap (V60), Vapotherm, Hamilton ventilator
- No 24/7 RT coverage; nurses manage respiratory treatments nights and weekends
This position is ideal for experienced CCU RNs with prior travel experience who are comfortable working autonomously in a critical care setting with variable patient acuity and flexible scheduling needs.
