Description

Registered Nurse (RN) - PACU (Peri Anesthesia)

Location

  • Lewiston, Maine
  • 2nd largest city in Maine
  • Close to Portland (40 minutes), Bangor (1.5 hours), Boston (2.5 hours)
  • Artsy and cultural atmosphere with many outdoor recreational activities

Employment Type

  • Travel assignment
  • Contract length: 13 weeks

Unit Profile

  • Department: Peri Anesthesia
  • Trauma Level III facility
  • 19-bed Pre-op/same day surgery unit and 12-bed Phase I PACU (both required)
  • Patient ratio: approximately 2:1
  • Shift: Variable between 5:30 AM – 8:00 PM
  • Weekly guaranteed hours: 36
  • Weekend hours: One weekend every 5-6 weeks
  • Call required
  • Float requirements: Rarely

Patient Population

  • All ages including pediatric patients

Required Certifications

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Maine
  • Minimum 2 years of PACU (Post Anesthesia Care) experience, including experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Experience in both inpatient and outpatient settings
  • Trauma experience
  • Experience in charge nurse roles
  • Current ACLS, BLS, and PALS certifications

Skills and Experience Must-Have

  • Ambulatory/outpatient and inpatient care
  • Experience in Level III Trauma Center environment
  • Pediatric PACU, Phase I and Phase II recovery
  • Pre-op and post-op care including assessment and education
  • Arterial line management
  • Dysrhythmia recognition and management
  • Care for a wide range of surgical procedures including general, orthopedic, vascular, urology, plastics, thoracic, and more
  • Blood product administration
  • Central line and PICC line care and management
  • Starting IVs and phlebotomy
  • Administration of emergency medications, IV vasopressors, narcotics/analgesics, antiarrhythmics, anticoagulants, antihypertensives
  • Procedural sedation and reversal agents
  • Airway assessment and management including ventilated patients, chest tube management, fresh tracheostomy care, oral/nasal airway placement
  • Interpretation of ABGs and lab values
  • Conscious sedation, epidural, general, local anesthesia, monitored anesthesia care (MAC), nerve blocks, spinal anesthesia
  • Pain assessment and management including PCA pump and RASS scale
  • Obtaining 12 lead EKGs and operative/procedural consents
  • Urinary catheterization (male and female)
  • Wound vac management
  • Isolation precautions and malignant hyperthermia protocols
  • Stroke scale and circulation checks
  • Management of pediatric patients

  • Trauma Level II experience
  • Teaching hospital experience
  • Experience with Cerner EHR and Omnicell medication systems
  • Previous charge nurse experience
  • Experience with bariatrics (gastric bypass, gastric sleeve)
  • Pulmonary artery line/Swan Ganz monitoring
  • Pacemaker insertion
  • Post cath lab procedures and sheath pull
  • Insulin protocols
  • Extubation, LMA/ET, intubation
  • Pre/post cath lab, endoscopy, and interventional radiology procedures

Equipment and Systems

  • EHR: Surginet-Cerner
  • Medication dispensing: Omnicell

Additional Information

  • Dress code: Scrubs provided; navy blue allowed if permitted by SDS
  • Personality fit: Adaptable to a fast-paced, multidisciplinary perioperative environment

This position offers a dynamic peri anesthesia nursing role in a Level III trauma center with a diverse surgical patient population and opportunities to utilize a broad range of clinical skills.
