Registered Nurse (ER) - Travel Assignment in Texas
Job Details
- Specialty: Emergency Room (ER)
- Location: Bryan, Texas (floats between Bryan and College Station campuses, 16 minutes apart)
- Contract Length: 12 weeks
- Shift: Nights
- Hours: 12 hours per shift, approximately 36 hours per week
- Unit: ER/ED
- Trauma Level: Level III Trauma Center
- Stroke Center: Primary Stroke Center with comprehensive capabilities
- ER Beds: 30 total beds (24 acute), 2 trauma bays
- Patient Volume: Approximately 135 patients per day
- Fast Track: Yes, called "vertical care"
- Triage: Separate triage area with a "first eyes nurse"; travelers may be placed in triage after skills assessment
- Psych/Seclusion Rooms: Intermixed within ER (no separate rooms)
- Security: In-house 24/7 with an off-duty officer always present in ER
Patient Population & Care
- Typical ER cases: nausea/vomiting, chest pain, fever, pediatric URI symptoms (10-15% pediatric patients), geriatric altered mental status
- Trauma: highest trauma area in the region covering 9 counties, including ground level falls, motor vehicle accidents, all-terrain vehicle injuries, assaults (gunshot wounds, stabbings)
- Critical care skills needed: central line placement, massive transfusion protocol (MTP), chest tubes, intubations, STEMI, strokes
- Common drips: Diltiazem, Cardene, Nitro, Propofol, Fentanyl, Levophed
- Equipment: PulseCheck or Picis EMR; RNs monitor their own telemetry strips
Staffing & Support
- Physicians: 1 MD 24/7, 2nd MD from 9 AM to 2 AM
- Midlevels: NP or PA 24/7, 2nd midlevel 10 AM to 10 PM
- Charge Nurse: Free-floating, may take patient assignment if needed, responds to codes and rapid responses
- Patient Care Techs: Perform EKGs, wound care, transport, ADLs, trauma setup (chest tubes, a-lines, central lines), and act as sitters/mental health advocates
- Respiratory Therapists: Assigned 24/7, perform ABGs, breathing treatments, and EKGs; RNs assist with troubleshooting vents, CPAP, BiPAP, high flow oxygen
- Radiology: X-Ray and CT available in ER with dedicated transporter
- Phlebotomy: Lab draws performed 24/7 in ER
Scheduling & Work Environment
- Hybrid scheduling: combination of self-scheduling and block scheduling
- Weekend requirement: every other weekend
- Holiday requirement: rotate with core staff, 1 major holiday
- No call or standby requirement
- Floating: May float to assist without assignment; will float to College Station campus as needed
- Dress code: Navy scrubs and undershirts required; scrub jackets optional but must be navy
- Orientation: 3 shifts in ER unit-specific orientation
- Culture: Positive team environment with active Shared Governance and Unit-Based Council (UBC)
- Shift pattern: 12-hour night shifts, every other weekend, first to float
Required Certifications & Exams
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
- TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course)
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
- Must pass Advanced Dysrhythmia exam with a minimum score of 83% before contract signing (3 attempts allowed)
Requirements/Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Texas
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- Minimum 3 years of Emergency Department (ED) nursing experience
- ED nursing experience within the last year
- Current certifications: ACLS, BLS, PALS, TNCC, NIHSS
Additional Notes
- Call-outs are strongly discouraged and may lead to termination
- The ER is a busy, high-acuity environment with a diverse patient population including pediatrics and trauma
- The facility operates its own EMS agency and helicopter service for trauma transport
