Registered Nurse (PCU) - Travel/Contract Position in Illinois
Job Details
- Location: Springfield, Illinois
- Employment Type: Travel/Contract
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
- Shift: Nights, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (18:45 - 07:15)
- Average Daily Census: 38 patients
- Work Schedule: Will work every other weekend; open to block schedule requests
- Floating: Required to float within scope to like units as needed
- On-Call: Not required
- Local Candidates: Accepted with no radius restrictions
- Guaranteed Hours: Client may cancel up to 36 hours per 13-week assignment without pay
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Illinois
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- Minimum 2 years of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience, including experience within the last year
- Experience with Cerner electronic health record system
- Experience in post cardiac angiogram, post myocardial infarction (MI), pre/post cardiac catheterization, and pre/post cardiac surgery care
- Skilled in sheath removal and TR band care
- Experience with pre/post hemodialysis management and renal failure care
- Proficient in accessing ports, arterial line management, and central line care/management
- Ability to titrate cardiac and vasoactive drips
- Experience caring for patients with cerebrovascular accident (CVA)
- Experience with surgical drains
Clinical Skills & Experience Requirements
- Work Setting Experience:
- MS/Telemetry, Telemetry, Cardiac Telemetry, PCU/DOU/IMC/Stepdown units
- Cardiac Monitoring & Emergency Response:
- Interpretation and management of dysrhythmias
- Telemetry monitoring (unit and remote)
- Cardiovascular Care:
- Post cardiac angiogram, MI, cardiac catheterization (pre/post), cardiac surgery (pre/post)
- Sheath removal, TR band care
- Gastrointestinal Care: Feeding tube care and management
- Genitourinary/Renal Care: Pre/post hemodialysis management, renal failure care
- IV Therapy & Phlebotomy:
- Accessing ports, arterial line management, blood product administration
- Central line, peripheral line, PICC line care and management
- Starting IVs
- Medication Management:
- Heparin protocols
- Management and titration of cardiac and vasoactive drips
- PCA management
- Neurological/Psychiatric Care: CVA care
- Surgical Care: Experience with surgical drains
- Respiratory Care:
- Chest tubes (Emerson/Pleur-evac)
- External CPAP/BIPAP, High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC), nasal cannula, oxygen face masks, portable oxygen tanks
- Non-invasive airway management
- Professional Skills:
- Isolation precautions
- Wound care and wound vac management
Additional Requirements & Information
- Background Checks: Comprehensive background checks required within 30 days of start, including SSN trace, criminal, sex offender, and federal exclusions
- Health Requirements:
- Physical exam within 1 year of start, including labs within 7 days of contract signing
- Fit mask test required (specific mask types accepted)
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year
- Immunizations or titers for Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
- 9-panel drug screen within 30 days of start
- Flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required annually
- Documentation:
- Valid US Driver’s License or State ID
- Primary source verification of certifications and licenses
- Photo for badge (color, plain background) required before start
- Code of conduct acknowledgment required within 7 days of contract signing
- Parking permit required (no cost)
- References: Two professional references required
- Competency Exam: Required for all clinical candidates
- State-Specific Checks: Illinois Department of Corrections, Most Wanted, and other state registry searches required within 30 days of start
- Restrictions:
- Return to work restrictions ideally no more than 5 days
- Fingerprinting must be completed in Illinois 3 business days prior to start (for candidates without active IL license)
Summary
This is a night shift travel Registered Nurse position in a progressive care unit (PCU) with a focus on telemetry and cardiac care. The role requires a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience, active Illinois RN licensure, and certifications in ACLS and BLS. Candidates must be skilled in cardiac monitoring, IV therapy, respiratory care, and emergency response. Experience with Cerner and previous charge nurse duties is preferred. The facility is a Level I trauma, Magnet-recognized acute care hospital. Comprehensive health screenings, background checks, and state-specific verifications are mandatory. The position offers a 13-week contract with a 3x12 hour night shift schedule and requires flexibility to float to similar units.
