Registered Nurse (Med Surg RN)

Location: Opelika, Alabama
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Job Details

• Unit Types: Med/Surg (5T and 7T units)
• Shifts: Nights, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours per shift (36 hours/week)
• Weekend Requirement: 4 shifts per 4 weeks
• Holiday Requirement:

  • 5T: 1 major and 2 minor holidays in winter
  • 7T: Thanksgiving or Christmas plus New Year’s Day or New Year’s Eve, and one summer holiday (July 4th or Memorial Day)
• Floating: Required within the medical-surgical division
• Scheduling:

  • 5T: Modified self-schedule
  • 7T: Contract employees do not self-schedule; block scheduling accommodated when possible
• Nurse-to-Patient Ratios: 1:5-6
• Nurse Aides: Present, goal ratio ≤ 1:12
• Charge Nurse: May be assigned based on census or staffing needs
• Radius Rule: 100 miles

Patient Population & Common Diagnoses

• 5T Unit: CKD, ESRD, CVA, Diabetes Mellitus
• 7T Unit: COPD, Sepsis, AMS, UTI, AKI, Diabetes, COVID-19, Anemia, Weakness

Clinical Responsibilities & Equipment

• Drip Titration:

  • 5T: No drip titration required
  • 7T: Heparin titration allowed with pharmacist direction; set rate drips including Amiodarone, Dobutamine, Cardizem (stable doses)
• Telemetry/Monitor Techs: None on unit; RNs must be able to read cardiac strips
• Telemetry Monitors: Phillips brand
• Respiratory Therapy Equipment:

  • 5T: High flow oxygen, CPAP, BiPAP
  • 7T: All oxygen modalities up to BiPAP; no ventilators

Orientation

• 5T: 2 shifts of unit-specific orientation
• 7T: One week of PCPO at education center plus two 12-hour shifts on assigned unit

Required Certifications

• Basic Life Support (BLS)
• NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification required on 5T unit

Required Qualifications

• Specialty: Med Surg Registered Nurse
• Experience: Emphasis on teamwork and initiative (not explicitly quantified)
• License: Valid RN license for Alabama
