Registered Nurse (Med Surg RN)

Location: Opelika, Alabama
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Job Description

• Provide nursing care on medical-surgical units with patient ratios of approximately 1:5-6.
• Work primarily night shifts (3x12-hour shifts, 36 hours per week).
• Weekend requirement: 4 shifts per 4 weeks.
• Holiday requirement includes one major and two minor holidays in winter or specified holidays depending on unit.
• Floating required within the medical-surgical division.
• Orientation varies by unit:

  • One unit requires 2 shifts of on-unit orientation.
  • Another requires one week of PCPO education plus two 12-hour shifts on the assigned unit.
• No call or standby requirement for contract staff.
• Modified self-scheduling or block scheduling depending on unit and contract status.

Units & Patient Care Details

• 5T Unit:

  • 34 beds, common diagnoses include CKD, ESRD, CVA, Diabetes Mellitus.
  • No drip titration required.
  • No tele/monitor techs on unit; RNs must be able to read cardiac strips.
  • Respiratory equipment includes high flow, CPAP, BiPAP (no ventilators).
  • Nurse aides available with a goal ratio of ≤1:12.

• 7T Unit:

  • 36 beds, common diagnoses include COPD, Sepsis, AMS, UTI, AKI, Diabetes, COVID, Anemia, Weakness.
  • RNs titrate heparin drips with pharmacist direction; manage stable doses of Amiodarone, Dobutamine, Cardizem.
  • No tele techs on floor; Phillips monitors used.
  • Respiratory equipment includes all oxygen modalities up to BiPAP (no ventilators).
  • Contract employees do not self-schedule; block scheduling accommodated when possible.

Required Certifications

• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
• National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification required for 5T unit.

Required Qualifications

• Current RN license valid in Alabama.
• Minimum 5 years of experience in Med Surg nursing (based on specialty and unit requirements).
• Ability to read cardiac strips independently.
• Demonstrated teamwork and initiative, especially on 7T unit.

Additional Information

• Scrub color: Ceil Blue (for 5T unit).
• Radius rule: Must live within 100 miles of the facility.
• Charge nurse role may be assigned based on census or staffing needs.

This position is suitable for experienced Med Surg RNs seeking a 13-week contract on night shifts with a focus on medical-surgical patient care in a hospital setting.
