Description
Registered Nurse (Med Surg / Ortho)
Location: Kearney, Nebraska
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights (12-hour shifts)
Hours per Week: 36
Job Description
- Provide nursing care on a Med Surg / Ortho unit with an average daily census of 6 patients in a 22-bed unit.
- Patient population includes total knee, hip, ankle, shoulder replacements, and spine (back and neck) cases.
- Nurse-to-patient ratio: approximately 1:5-6.
- Charge nurse present on each shift and takes assignments.
- Nurse aids/patient care techs support the unit with a ratio of 1:13.
- Telemetry techs read and interpret cardiac strips; RNs are not required to read their own telemetry.
- Common drips include pain medications, antibiotics, and blood; RNs are not required to titrate drips.
- Floating may be required to Med Surg, rehab, or PCU units with Med Surg acuity.
- Orientation: 1 day of unit/department-specific orientation.
- Scheduling: Self-scheduling with cyclic rotation; block scheduling only approved for weekends.
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend.
- Holiday requirement: Rotate with permanent staff.
- On-call callback time: 30 minutes to arrive if called back in.
- Attributes for success: Team-oriented, flexible, willing to learn, takes ownership within the department.
Required Qualifications
- Current RN license appropriate for Nebraska.
- Minimum experience: Med Surg and Orthopedics nursing experience (general and ortho experience required).
- BLS Certification required.
- Must pass a 90% score on a pass/fail open book skills exam during orientation. Failure results in contract termination.
- Valid driver’s license required at time of submission to verify candidate is within a 50-mile radius.
- Candidates may not be currently employed full time, part time, or PRN with any facility associated with a specific large healthcare system (CommonSpirit, including CHI and/or Dignity).
- Artificial nails are prohibited in all patient care areas; refusal to remove will result in contract termination.
Additional Information
- Phlebotomy services available 24/7.
- Radius rule: Candidates must live within 50 miles of the facility.
- Return to office (RTO) required within 7 days or less from contract start; no additional RTO extensions allowed.
