Description
Registered Nurse – Med Surg
Location: Bottineau, North Dakota
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Day/Night rotation
Hours: 12-hour shifts, approximately 36 hours per week
Unit and Patient Population
- Small Critical Access Hospital with 25 beds
- Unit: Medical-Surgical (Med Surg) and Swing Bed, with some ER floating
- Nurse-to-patient ratios:
- Med Surg: 1:3-6
- Swing bed: 1:10-13
- Patient diagnoses commonly include:
- Diabetes Mellitus (DM)
- Myocardial Infarction (MI)
- Congestive Heart Failure (CHF)
- Atrial Fibrillation (A. Fib)
- Cellulitis
- GI Bleeds
- Urinary Tract Infections (UTI)
- Pneumonia
- COVID-19
- Chest Pain
- Gastroenteritis
- Falls, Weakness
- Electrolyte Imbalances
- Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
- Large elderly population with chronic conditions
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in North Dakota
- Minimum 1 year of Medical-Surgical nursing experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) / Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Certifications required:
- Basic Life Support (BLS) issued by the American Heart Association
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)
- Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC)
- National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
Clinical Responsibilities and Skills
- RNs must titrate insulin, heparin, and most medications until patient transfer if warranted
- No telemetry/monitor techs on unit; RNs read and interpret their own cardiac strips (Phillips monitors)
- Respiratory therapy equipment not present; nursing staff perform ABGs, breathing treatments, and 12-lead EKGs
- Duties include:
- Accessing/de-accessing ports
- PICC line care
- Wound care including wound vacs
- Mixing and preparing medications
Scheduling and Work Environment
- Shift schedule: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each, rotating day and night shifts
- Modified self-scheduling with final schedule balancing by leadership
- Weekend requirement: every other to every third weekend for RNs
- Holiday rotation participation may be required
- No call or standby requirements
- Floating between Med Surg, Swing bed, and ER units as needed
- Charge nurse typically has a light patient assignment
- Nurse aide support available; ratios vary by census and staffing
- Dress code: any color or print scrubs, closed-toe shoes required
- Orientation: 4-8 shifts depending on assigned roles and areas
