Description
Registered Nurse – Emergency Department
Location: Prescott Valley, Arizona
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit Overview
- Emergency Department with 24 beds, including 4 critical rooms and 1 trauma room (Level 4 trauma center)
- Average patient volume: 80-110 patients per day
- Nurse-to-patient ratios:
- General ED: 1:4
- ICU in ED: 1:2 or 1:1 depending on acuity
- Separate triage area where travelers may triage if able
- Separate psych/seclusion rooms (2 well-equipped)
- Security present 24/7 in the ED and roving campus-wide
- Intake model used for lower acuity patients with flexible RN-to-patient ratios
- Charge nurse and house supervisor coverage 24/7; charge nurse generally does not take patient assignments
- ED Techs support nursing with IV skills, phlebotomy, splinting, wound care, transport, and special procedures
- Paramedics staffed daily (1100-2300) in intake area, able to administer 12 medications and discharge patients
Required Certifications & Skills
- ACLS, PALS, TNCC certifications required
- Minimum 2 years Emergency Department nursing experience
- Skills in conscious sedation, critical thinking, and AMI (acute myocardial infarction) management
Clinical & Equipment Details
- Common patient diagnoses: chest pain, abdominal pain, minor trauma, respiratory distress
- Respiratory Therapists (RT) available hospital-wide; RNs troubleshoot ventilators, BiPAP, CPAP, high flow devices, and call RT for issues
- RNs read their own telemetry strips; all beds have telemetry monitor capability
- X-ray and CT available adjacent to ED; transport staff handle patient transport for imaging
- Phlebotomy performed by both RNs and dedicated phlebotomists depending on situation
Scheduling & Work Environment
- Night shift, 12-hour shifts, approximately 36 hours per week
- Block scheduling allowed, with no more than 4 consecutive shifts
- Weekend requirement: every other weekend (day shifts on Sat/Sun, night shifts Fri/Sat)
- Holiday coverage required for major holidays (July 4, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve/Day, New Year’s Eve/Day), negotiable
- One on-call shift per 28-day schedule; day shift covers day call, mid and night shifts cover night call
- Floating required between east and west ED units, generally prescheduled
- Dress code: navy blue dignity scrubs
Orientation & Training
- Hospital orientation: 2 days
- Unit orientation: one 12-hour shift with mentor in each ED (east and west)
- Two on-call shifts per 28-day schedule during orientation period
