Description

Registered Nurse (Med Surg Ortho Trauma)

Location: Omaha, Nebraska
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Days (12-hour shifts)
Hours per Week: 36 hours guaranteed


Unit & Patient Population

  • Department: Medical-Surgical / Telemetry / Orthopedics (4th Floor North & South)
  • Unit Size: 55 beds
  • Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:5-6
  • Patient Types: Joint replacements, fractures, colon resections, COPD exacerbations, prostatectomy, cellulitis, sepsis, orthopedic trauma, GI bleeds, pneumonia, failure to thrive
  • Common Drips to Titrate: Heparin, lidocaine, ketamine
  • Common Drips: PCA pumps
  • Telemetry: Telemetry techs interpret strips; RNs should have tele awareness but are not required to read strips independently
  • Charge Nurse: Present on each shift and takes an assignment
  • Nurse Aides/Patient Care Techs: Yes, ratio approximately 1:10-20

Scheduling & Work Requirements

  • Shift Times: 0630-1900 (day), 1830-0700 (night)
  • Scheduling: Travelers are scheduled; limited block scheduling allowed
  • Weekend Requirement: Typically every other weekend; additional coverage as needed
  • Holiday Requirement: 2-3 holidays between Thanksgiving and New Year’s
  • Floating: Required to float to other MedSurg areas or units with MedSurg patients waiting for beds
  • Orientation: 2 days of unit/department-specific orientation
  • Return to Office (RTO): Required within 7 days of contract start; no additional RTO approved

Required Qualifications

  • License: Registered Nurse (RN) license required
  • Certifications: BLS (AHA) required; ACLS preferred
  • Exam: Pass/fail open book exam during orientation with a minimum score of 90% required to continue
  • Driver’s License: Required at time of submission to verify candidate is outside a 50-mile radius
  • Experience: Minimum 4 years in Med Surg Ortho Trauma specialty (based on specialty code interpretation)
  • Prior Travel Experience: Not explicitly required

  • Radius Rule: Candidates must live outside a 50-mile radius and may not be currently employed full-time, part-time, or PRN with any facility associated with certain health systems
  • Fingernail Policy: Artificial nails are prohibited in all patient care areas; refusal to comply results in contract termination
  • Dress Code: Navy blue scrubs for RNs
  • Equipment: Mechanical lifts available in every other patient room
  • Unit Culture: Emphasis on hourly rounding, responsiveness, managing multiple admissions/discharges, teamwork, compassion, and cultural sensitivity (serves diverse populations including Spanish, Karen, Burmese)
