Job Opportunity: Labor and Delivery Registered Nurse (RN)

Location: Charleston, West Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Work schedule options:
    • Nights: 3 or 4 shifts of 12 hours (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM), weekdays, every other weekend, with float duties
    • Days: 3 or 4 shifts of 12 hours (7:00 AM – 7:30 PM), weekdays, every other weekend, with float duties
  • Must be able to float to Mother Baby unit as needed
  • Assignment can be 40 hours per week if full-time hours are desired
  • Unit cares for low-risk and high-risk obstetrics, including labor and delivery, triage, operating rooms, recovery, and high-risk antepartum
  • Nurses collaborate with midwives and physicians to support childbirth experiences ranging from minimal intervention to major complications
  • Experience with circulating in the OR, fetal heart monitoring (FHM), IV starts required; triage and scrub skills are a plus
  • Weekend work required every other weekend
  • No blocked schedule requests allowed

Required Experience & Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in West Virginia
  • Minimum 2 years of Labor and Delivery experience, including experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) issued by the American Heart Association
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) issued by the American Heart Association
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Procedure)
  • Circulating experience in the OR setting
  • Experience with fetal heart monitoring (FHM)
  • Experience with Cerner electronic medical records
  • State License 1 Verification
  • Acknowledgement of Pass/Fail Testing

Certifications & Competencies

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
  • Pass/Fail Testing: EKG exam, medication calculation exam, blood administration test (required for nursing candidates)
  • Annual skills checklist for specialty required
  • Color blind testing required prior to start
  • Additional certifications such as PALS, CHEMO, TNCC may be required depending on unit assignment

Health & Safety Requirements

  • Physical exam within 1 year of start, confirming good health and no physical limitations
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 3 months of start
  • Required vaccinations or proof of immunity: Tdap, MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella), Hepatitis B, Varicella
  • Seasonal flu vaccination required during flu season (October 1 – March 31) unless approved medical or religious exemption is granted
  • COVID-19 vaccination is not mandatory; proof of vaccination or signed declination accepted
  • Annual fit mask testing (N95) required; accommodations available if needed
  • Drug screen within 30 days of start, including a full panel of substances

Additional Requirements

  • Must submit:
    • Candidate profile/work history
    • Specialty-specific skills checklist
    • Minimum two manager/charge nurse references within past 2 years
    • RN license verification (NURSYS verification within 2 days of submission)
    • Valid Driver’s License and Social Security Card
  • Background checks including 7-year criminal history, sex offender search, and federal exclusions list
  • Orientation is two days (Thursday and Friday) including Cerner Infusion Management training
  • Flu shot refusal without medical proof will disqualify candidate during flu season
  • No local candidates accepted within 100-mile radius unless exception granted

Work Environment & Dress Code

  • Scrub color: Royal Blue
  • Unit is a regional tertiary care center supporting local and outlying hospital obstetric needs

References

  • One reference required from a manager, supervisor, or charge nurse from a facility worked within 1 year of start
  • Charge nurse references must confirm direct supervision

This position is ideal for experienced Labor and Delivery RNs seeking a travel contract with a reputable regional obstetrics unit, offering a mix of low and high-risk patient care with opportunities to float to Mother Baby units.
