Speech Language Pathologist - Acute Care Hospital

Location: Charleston, West Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Details

  • Shift: Day shift, 5 days per week, 8 hours per day (8:00 AM - 4:30 PM, includes 30-minute lunch)
  • Guaranteed Hours: 40 hours per week
  • Weekend Requirement: One weekend per month
  • Patient Population: Medically complex cases including respiratory failure, dysphagia, ICU myelopathy, cardiac, vascular, and pulmonary conditions
  • Caseload Ratios: Day shift 1:12, weekends 1:20
  • Orientation: Every other week, starts on Mondays
  • Schedule Flexibility: Blocked schedule requests can be discussed during interview
  • Travel Radius: 100-mile radius rule (75-99 miles requires facility approval)

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Speech Language Pathologist license in West Virginia
  • Minimum 1 year of Speech Language Pathologist experience within the last year
  • Completion of at least one travel assignment
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification
  • CCC-SLP (Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology)
  • MBSImP (Modified Barium Swallow Impairment Profile) certification

Documentation & Compliance Requirements

  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Social Security Card (legible)
  • 7-year criminal background check within 30 days of start
  • Negative drug screen within 30 days of start (includes amphetamines, barbiturates, cocaine, opiates, phencyclidine, benzodiazepines, methadone, propoxyphene)
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start, signed by a licensed provider, confirming good health and no physical limitations
  • Annual fit mask testing (N95 3M 1860 Small/Regular or Aura 9205) or accommodation with PAPR if needed
  • Immunizations and titers:
    • Tdap (after age 11) with medical/religious exemptions accepted with approval
    • Negative TB test within 3 months or chest X-ray if positive TB history
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella (2 vaccines or positive titers; boosters required if negative/equivocal)
    • Hepatitis B vaccination or documented immunity
    • Varicella vaccination or documented immunity
  • Annual flu vaccination or approved exemption during flu season
  • Annual TB questionnaire for positive TB responders
  • Submission package must include: candidate profile, specialty skills checklist, minimum 2 manager/charge nurse references (within past 2 years), license verification (within 2 days of submission), driver’s license, and social security card

References & Skills

  • At least 1 reference required from a manager, supervisor, or charge nurse within 1 year of start
  • Annual specialty-specific skills checklist required, demonstrating true skills

  • Short Term Acute Care Hospital
  • Level IV Trauma Center and major teaching hospital
  • Charting systems: Cerner, SBAR, PXYIS
  • Free parking for travelers
  • Scrub color: Black

Additional Notes

  • Permanent employees cannot return as travelers for 2 years after last permanent day worked at this facility
  • No return to work restrictions (RTO) but discuss during interview
  • Orientation is two days (Thursday and Friday) covering Cerner Infusion Management
  • Candidate must complete required inservice training modules prior to start (approx. 4 hours)
  • Flu vaccination compliance deadline during flu season is strict; non-compliance may result in removal from assignment
