Registered Nurse (Surgical Acute) - Illinois, Peoria
Job Details
- Specialty: Surgical Acute
- Location: Peoria, Illinois
- Contract Length: 18 weeks
- Shift: Nights (1930-0730)
- Hours: 12-hour shifts, 36 hours per week
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (Saturday and Sunday)
- Holiday Requirement: Rotate every other holiday
- Scheduling: Travelers do not self-schedule; block scheduling may be considered with approval
- Floating: Travelers are first to float; will float to units matching experience level (e.g., ICU RN floating to general unit takes 3 patients)
- Orientation: 2 shifts with preceptor plus one 12-hour shift for EPIC, professional orientation, and unit educator
Unit Information
- Department: Surgical Acute
- Beds: 63 total (49 private, 9 observation)
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratios: 4-5 patients per RN (days), 5-6 patients per RN (nights)
- Nurse Aids/Patient Care Techs: 7-10 patients per PCT (days), 10-15 patients per PCT (nights); assist with vitals, accu checks, ADLs, turning, and ambulation
- Charge Nurse: Yes, 2 charge RNs per shift; charge nurses do not take patient assignments
- House Supervisor: 24/7 coverage
- Telemetry: Some patients on telemetry with Phillips monitors; bedside RNs do not read strips (monitor techs handle this)
- Respiratory Therapy Equipment: No vents; CPAP and high flow available; RT manages nebulizers, RNs manage inhalers and CPAP placement
Patient Population & Care
- Common Diagnoses/Types of Patients: Post-op surgical, trauma, overflow medical patients
- Common Procedures/Care: Dressing changes, wound care, IV therapy, pain management, drains, NG tubes, central lines, TPN
- Drip Management: RNs do not titrate drips except for Heparin (set rate only)
- Post-op care and critical thinking skills required
- Emphasis on good bedside manner and teamwork
Required Certifications & Licenses
- Active Illinois RN license or confirmation that application process has been initiated
- BLS (AHA) certification required
Additional Requirements & Notes
- Must produce a negative drug screen for all panels (drug-free campus)
- Local placements accepted within a 50-mile radius of permanent address
- Non-billable orientation hours: 12 hours
- Call or standby: None
- Scrub color/dress code: Any color; scrubs provided
- Submission requirements include last four digits of SSN, middle initial, and requested time off
