Description
Registered Nurse (RN) – Adult Medical Specialty Unit
Location: Peoria, Illinois
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Days (7:00 AM – 7:00 PM)
Hours per Week: 36 (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each)
Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (Sat/Sun for days)
Holiday Requirement: Varies
Orientation: 2-3 shifts (non-billable, 12 hours guaranteed orientation)
Unit Overview
- 56 beds (private and semi-private)
- Nurse-to-patient ratios:
- 1:4-5 (07:00–23:00)
- 1:5-6 (23:00–07:30)
- Free charge nurse on each floor (does not take patient assignment)
- Patient care technicians (PCTs) assist with vital signs, accu-checks, bladder scans, and ADLs; PCT ratio 1:8-10
- House-wide telemetry monitored remotely; RNs can view strips on pack or computer (Phillips monitors)
- Respiratory therapy equipment includes BiPAP/CPAP for sleep apnea, inhalers, and suctioning
Patient Population & Common Diagnoses
- Acute care general medicine patients with conditions such as:
- Cellulitis
- Sepsis
- Dehydration
- Electrolyte imbalance
- Syncope
- Anemia
- Uncontrolled diabetes
- Acute respiratory failure
- Liver failure
- Kidney failure
- Behavioral health and addictions
Required Qualifications
- Active Illinois RN license or proof that application process has been initiated
- BLS (AHA) certification required
- Must pass a comprehensive drug screen (drug-free campus policy)
- Experience with central lines, tracheostomies, and chest tubes required
- EPIC electronic health record experience preferred
- Prior travel experience on a MedSurg floor preferred; candidates with Level I trauma center experience may be considered without travel experience if EPIC experience is present
- No requirement for RNs to titrate drips (common drips include Heparin and Lasix)
Scheduling & Work Environment
- 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 AM – 7:00 PM)
- Self-scheduling and block scheduling available via electronic system
- Floating required to other acute care general medicine areas such as nephrology, neurology, orthopedics, and oncology
- No call or standby requirements
- Dress code: professional scrubs of any color; no visible tattoos or piercings except ears
Additional Notes
- Local placements accepted within a 50-mile radius
- Call-off policy allows 12 hours off every 13 weeks without penalty
- Orientation hours are non-billable and guaranteed hours do not apply during orientation
