Description
Job Opportunity: Operating Room Registered Nurse
Location: Charleston, South Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Position Details
- Shift: Day shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (6:30 AM – 7:00 PM)
- On-call: Yes, up to 4 call shifts every 4 weeks
- Weekend Requirement: Up to one working weekend shift every 4 weeks
- Floating: Required to float within scope to meet facility needs, including sister units/facilities
- Local Radius: 60 miles
- Locals Accepted: Yes, on a case-by-case basis
Facility Overview
- Level I Trauma Center, Teaching Facility, Magnet designated hospital
- 21 Operating Room suites covering all surgical specialties including Trauma, Transplant, Orthopedics, Neurosurgery, ENT, GU-GYN, and Robotics
- Nursing team: 75% Registered Nurses trained to both scrub and circulate surgical procedures
- Charting system: EPIC
- Parking: Permit required with a $20 registration fee for garage access; additional fees may apply for other parking locations
- Emergency response team participation required (Hurricane season June-November)
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in South Carolina
- Minimum 2 years of Operating Room (OR) nursing experience
- OR nursing experience within the last year
- BLS (Basic Life Support) certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
Certifications & Competencies
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) as required by unit (check specific unit requirements)
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) if applicable
- TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) as required (not required for ER RNs)
- Color Blind Testing (required prior to start)
- Medication/Pharmacology Competency Exam (required)
- Competency Exam for OR (Peds OR candidates without pediatric experience may use regular OR competency exam)
Health & Safety Requirements
- Initial physical exam, updated annually, attesting ability to meet physical demands
- Fit test for N95 mask within 90 days prior to start, renewed annually (specific mask models required)
- Immunizations and titers:
- Tdap within 10 years or declination form
- Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella: Positive titer or vaccination series with boosters as needed
- Hepatitis B: Titer, vaccine series, or declination
- Varicella: Positive titer or vaccination series with boosters as needed
- Negative TB test (T-spot or Q-Gold) within 90 days of start or proof of prior positive with chest x-ray
- Annual TB questionnaire
- 10-panel drug screen within 90 days of start (no instant tests)
- Seasonal flu vaccination or medical/religious exemption required during flu season (August 1 – March 31)
- COVID vaccination highly preferred; declination form required if not vaccinated
Background & Documentation Requirements
- Annual background check covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years, including:
- SSN trace, county and statewide checks, sex offender registry, national criminal, and FACIS 3
- International searches if applicable
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start and updated for renewals
- Education verification required; diploma or transcripts accepted as placeholder if needed
- Work history verification of last 3 clinical employers (attestation letters accepted if verification not possible)
- Proof of 2 clinical references or hospital evaluations
- Complete employment application/resume including all PTO, contract assignments, agency names, and no unaccounted gaps
- Primary source verification of active, unencumbered SC RN license (NURSYS verification required)
- Radiation badge required for OR RN; candidates cannot start without it (may take 5-7 days to process)
Facility Specific Requirements
- Completion of orientation modules and First Day Instructions prior to start (approx. 2 hours)
- Upload clear, passport-style badge photo (frontal view, shoulders up, business casual attire) by Wednesday before start
- Upload COVID and flu vaccination documentation into facility platform
- Physical assessment form required for sterile processing techs (not applicable for RN)
- Radiation exposure attestation required prior to start if radiation badge is needed
Additional Notes
- Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks; called off hours can be combined to equal 1 shift
- Block scheduling possible with manager approval, dependent on unit needs
- Travelers assigned to emergency response teams; consider hurricane season impact on assignments
