OR Tech / Surgical Tech - Travel/Contract Position

Location: Springfield, Illinois
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Details

  • Shift: Evening, 5 days a week, 8-hour shifts (14:45 - 23:15)
  • Average Daily Census: 50-60 surgical cases per day
  • Weekend Requirement: Yes, approximately once a month with 16 total hours obligation
  • On-Call: Required as needed
  • Floating: May be required to float within scope of practice
  • Schedule Flexibility: Block schedule requests can be discussed with manager
  • Local Candidates: Not accepted; must live more than 50 miles from facility

Required Experience & Skills

  • Minimum Specialty Experience: 3 years in Surgical Services (OR Tech/Surgical Tech)
  • First-Time Travelers: Not accepted (prior travel experience required)
  • Required Work Settings Experience: General OR, Teaching Hospital, Level I Trauma Center
  • Trauma Experience: Level I trauma experience required

Case Skills / Procedures Experience Required

  • Ear, Nose, Throat (ENT): Direct laryngoscopy, radial neck dissection, tonsillectomy/adenoidectomy, tracheostomy
  • Endoscopic Procedures: Colonoscopy, EGD, PEG tube placement/exchange
  • General Surgery: Appendectomy, cholecystectomy, colon resection (open/laparoscopic), hernia repair (inguinal/umbilical), laparoscopic-assisted procedures, mastectomy, partial/total thyroidectomy
  • Gynecology: Abdominal hysterectomy, anterior/posterior repair, bilateral tubal ligation, dilation & curettage, laparoscopic-assisted gynecological procedures, vaginal hysterectomy
  • Neurosurgery: Craniotomy, laminectomy/discectomy, lumbar fusion
  • Oral Surgery: Repair of fractured jaws (mandibular and zygomatic)
  • Orthopedic Surgery: Arthroscopy, arthrotomy, carpal tunnel release, closed/open fracture reduction, laminectomy/discectomy
  • Plastic Surgery: Free flap - microvascular
  • Trauma: Amputations, gunshot/stab wounds, motor vehicle accident (multiple injuries)
  • Urology: Cystoscopy, laparoscopic-assisted cases, nephrectomy, ureteroscopy
  • Emergency Management: Fire safety
  • Equipment/Instrumentation: Drills (multiple types), electrosurgical units, fiber optic light sources/cords
  • Professional Knowledge: Aseptic technique, isolation precautions, radiation safety, sharps safety, specimen handling/labeling, universal protocol (time out) procedure

Certifications & Licenses

  • License: Valid Surgical Technician license in Illinois required
  • Certifications:
    • BLS (Basic Life Support) required
    • Surgical Technician license valid in Illinois required

Requirements / Qualifications

  • Valid Surgical Technician license in Illinois
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience as a Surgical Technician
  • Surgical Technician experience within the last year
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification

Compliance & Onboarding Requirements

  • Must be physically present in Illinois at least 3 business days prior to start for fingerprinting (must be done in-state)
  • Background checks required within 30 days of start, including:
    • Criminal, sex offender, national databases, EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG
    • Illinois-specific searches (Department of Corrections, Most Wanted, State Police Murderer and Violent Offender Against Youth Registry)
  • Drug screening (9-panel) required within 30 days of start
  • Physical exam required within 1 year of start, including labs within 7 days of contract signing
  • Fit mask test required (specific mask types accepted)
  • Immunizations or proof of immunity required for:
    • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella (2 MMR vaccines or positive titer)
    • Hepatitis B (vaccine series, positive titer, or exemption)
    • Varicella (2 vaccines or positive titer)
    • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required annually
  • TB testing (2-step PPD, TSPOT, or Qgold) within 1 year of start, with chest x-ray if positive test
  • Competency exam and skills checklist required for all clinical candidates
  • Photo for badge required before start
  • Review and sign code of conduct and parking permit forms within 7 days of contract signing

Summary

This is a travel contract position for an experienced OR Tech / Surgical Tech with a minimum of 3 years of specialty experience and prior travel experience. The role requires a broad range of surgical case skills across multiple specialties including trauma, general surgery, neurosurgery, and more. Candidates must be willing to work evening shifts, weekends occasionally, and be on-call as needed. Compliance with Illinois-specific background checks, fingerprinting, immunizations, and other health requirements is mandatory. Local candidates are not eligible.
