Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse - Medical Oncology (Travel/Contract)
Location: Columbus, Ohio

Job Description
- Work in a medical oncology unit caring for adult and geriatric patients with solid tumor cancers including breast, lung, prostate, pancreatic, colon, and esophageal cancers.
- Patient care spans the full cancer journey: new diagnosis, treatment, and end-of-life care.
- Staffing ratios aim for 1:4, occasionally 1:5.
- Shifts are 12 hours, rotating between day and night (day: 7:00 AM - 7:30 PM; night: 7:00 PM - 7:30 AM), scheduled in 3 shifts per week (36 hours/week).
- Shift assignments are reviewed every 4 weeks; self-scheduling requests are accommodated before final schedule posting.
- Orientation includes one week of Monday-Friday day shifts followed by 36 hours of on-unit orientation with a preceptor.
- Floating to other MedSurg Oncology units is required.
- Heavy emphasis on infection prevention protocols and patient fall prevention.
- Patients often have medical-surgical issues in addition to oncology care.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Ohio.
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
- Minimum 1 year of telemetry experience, including telemetry experience within the last year.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
- Experience with Epic electronic health record system.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous travel nursing experience preferred.
Patient Population
- Adults and geriatrics with various solid tumor cancers.
Orientation & Training
- Two-week orientation:
- Week 1: Monday-Friday day shifts.
- Week 2: 36 hours on-unit with a preceptor.
Scheduling & Shifts
- 12-hour shifts, rotating day and night.
- 3 shifts per week (36 hours total).
- No set/blocked scheduling; variable weekends based on unit needs.
Required Background & Compliance
- 7-year criminal background check including SS trace, counties lived/worked, nationwide check, sex offender registry, and motor vehicle record if driving is required.
- FBI and BCI fingerprinting required within 1 year of start, with specific Ohio fingerprinting codes.
- Education verification from an accredited nursing program (CCNE, ACEN, or NLN CNEA).
- Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug test within 3 months of start (includes amphetamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, cannabinoids, cocaine, methadone, methaqualone, opiates, PCP, propoxyphene).
- Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG monitoring.
- Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming good health and free of contagious disease.
- Immunizations and health requirements:
- Tdap vaccine (adult dose after age 11/12).
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year. TB questionnaire required annually.
- MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella): 2 vaccines or positive titer; boosters if low titer.
- Varicella: 2 vaccines or positive titer; medical exemptions require documentation.
- Hepatitis B: Titer or 3-vaccine series or signed declination.
- Seasonal flu vaccine or declination during flu season (10/1 - 3/31). Mask required if declining.
- Fraud, Waste, and Abuse training certificate required prior to start and updated annually.
- Dress code and hand hygiene policy acknowledgment required.
- Confidential Fraud Waste Abuse and Compliance Reporting Mechanism form required.
- Annual orientation safety manual acknowledgment.
- References: 2 professional references required; at least one from a manager or formal leadership.
Electronic Health Record System
- EPIC computerized charting system used.
Additional Notes
- Candidates must complete fingerprinting and background checks as per Ohio state and facility-specific requirements.
- Candidates with gaps in employment over 30 days may require updated health documents and background checks.
- Facility does not offer set/blocked scheduling as permanent staff receive.
- Candidates must be prepared for floating to other oncology med-surg units.
