Description

Registered Nurse (RN) – ICU

Location

  • Omaha, Nebraska

Contract Length

  • 13 weeks

Schedule

  • 12-hour shifts
  • 36 hours guaranteed per week
  • Shift times: 06:30–18:30 (days) and 18:30–06:30 (nights)
  • Weekend requirement: every other weekend
  • Holiday requirement: 2 out of 3 major holidays or every other, based on unit needs
  • Schedule created by manager based on unit needs (no self-scheduling)

Unit Details

  • Medical-Surgical ICU with 34 beds
  • Nurse-to-patient ratios:
    • ICU: 1:1 to 1:2
    • Progressive Care Unit (PCU): 1:4 to 1:5
    • Medical-Surgical: 1:5 to 1:6
  • Patient population: Adults and pediatrics over 15 years old
  • Common diagnoses and conditions:
    • Neuro surgery (including thrombectomy program) – no prior experience required
    • Respiratory failure, ARDS, MODS, sepsis, stroke
    • Cardiogenic shock (impella, balloon pump) – no prior experience required
    • Renal failure with CRRT – no prior experience required
    • General surgery, psych/overdose, GI bleeds
    • Cancer-specific surgeries (e.g., esophagectomy, internal chemo administration)
  • Equipment and monitoring:
    • CVPs, arterial lines, Swan-Ganz catheters, EV-1000, ICP monitoring (training provided)
    • Zoll Thermoguard for hypothermia protocol, Bell Mont rapid transfuser
    • Respiratory equipment: nasal cannula to ventilators (RNs troubleshoot)
    • Telemetry: Draeger heart monitoring with centralized telemetry; RNs must read and interpret strips (no telemetry techs)
  • Drip titration required for vasopressors, paralytics, narcotics, sedation, antiarrhythmics
  • Charge nurse present on each shift, attends rapid response teams (RRTs) and codes, and takes assignments
  • Patient care techs/nurse aides present with a ratio of 1:18

Orientation and Training

  • Unit-specific orientation: 2 shifts
  • RN skills exam during orientation: open book, must pass with 90% or higher to continue

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Nebraska
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Minimum 2 years of recent ICU experience, including ICU experience within the last year
  • Certifications: ACLS, BLS, NIHSS

Additional Information

  • Radius rule: candidates must live within 50 miles and cannot be currently employed full-time, part-time, or PRN with any facility associated with certain health systems
  • Floating: nurses will float to all inpatient units except Maternity and NICU
  • Dress code: navy blue scrubs
  • Fast-paced tertiary hospital environment with volume fluctuations
  • Successful candidates demonstrate critical thinking, positive attitude, teamwork, willingness to help, and good communication skills
  • Collaboration with attendings, fellows, residents, and student providers is expected
  • Return to office (RTO) required within 7 days of contract start; no additional RTO extensions allowed
