Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) Registered Nurse (RN) Travel Job
Location
- Nebraska, Boys Town area
Contract Details
- Duration: 10–13 weeks (approximately 12 weeks)
- Shift: Night shift, 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM (12-hour shifts)
- Hours: 36 hours per week
- Start Date: Available to start within 2-3 weeks; contract runs from January to March 2025
- Schedule: Fixed shifts with no frequent schedule changes, allowing for consistent and predictable scheduling
- Patient Population: Primarily pediatric patients with some exposure to adult patients in the medical/surgical unit during emergencies
- No on-call requirement; every other weekend shift
Job Overview
- Provide direct care to critically ill pediatric patients in a high-acuity PICU setting
- Manage patients with complex conditions including respiratory distress, sepsis, neuro-surgical needs, and critical neurological monitoring
- Work with both Intermediate Care Unit (IMU) and Acute Care Unit (ACU) patients as needed
- Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to ensure comprehensive care
Key Responsibilities
- Manage ventilators (hospital and home), including settings, suctioning, and airway management
- Titrate sedation and other medication drips safely (e.g., Versed, Fentanyl, Precedex)
- Care for patients with neurosurgical conditions such as tumor resections, VP shunts, spinal cord untethering, craniofacial reconstruction, ICP monitoring, and external ventricular drains (EVD)
- Manage neurological conditions including epilepsy and seizure care
- Assist with arterial and central line placement and monitoring
- Support resuscitation efforts for emergent adult patients in the medical/surgical unit when needed
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years of experience in a PICU or equivalent high-acuity pediatric setting
- BLS (Basic Life Support) certification – Required
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certification – Required
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) certification – Preferred but not required to start immediately
Skills and Experience
- Expertise in cardiorespiratory monitoring and ventilator management
- Experience managing sedation infusions and titratable drips
- Skilled in handling complex pediatric neurological cases and post-surgical recovery
- Proficient with arterial and central line care and invasive monitoring tools
- Ability to manage pediatric patients in distress, including respiratory and sepsis cases
- Comfortable providing emergency support to adult patients if necessary
