Description
Registered Nurse (RN) – MedSurg/Telemetry Neuro Unit
Location: Omaha, Nebraska
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights (12-hour shifts)
Hours per Week: 36 hours
Unit Overview
- Department: Medical-Surgical Neurology, 4th Floor North
- Unit Size: 25 beds
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:5-6
- Patient Types: MedSurg/Telemetry patients including strokes, stable neurological deficits, post-neurosurgery, joint replacements, fractures, colon resections, COPD exacerbations, prostatectomy, cellulitis, sepsis, orthopedic trauma, GI bleeds, pneumonia, failure to thrive
- Common Drips Titrated by RNs: Heparin, lidocaine, ketamine
- Common Drips/Devices: PCA pumps
- Telemetry: Telemetry techs interpret strips; RNs should have tele awareness
- Support Staff: Charge nurse on each shift (takes assignment), nurse aides/patient care techs (ratio 1:10-20)
- Floating: Required to float to other MedSurg areas or units with MedSurg patients waiting for beds
- Orientation: 2 days of unit-specific orientation
- Dress Code: Navy blue scrubs for RNs
Scheduling & Requirements
- Shift Times: 0630-1900 and 1830-0700 (travelers scheduled; limited block scheduling allowed)
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
- Holiday Requirement: 2-3 holidays between Thanksgiving and New Year’s
- Floating: Yes, to other MedSurg units as needed
Required Certifications & Qualifications
- Current RN license
- BLS (American Heart Association)
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Must pass a pass/fail exam during orientation with a minimum score of 90% (open book, resources provided)
- Valid driver’s license required at submission (used to verify candidate is within 50-mile radius)
- Fingernail Policy: Artificial nails prohibited in all patient care areas; refusal to comply results in contract termination
Experience & Preferences
- Preferred: Prior travel nursing experience
- Strong candidates without prior travel experience will be considered
- No license or background issues
Additional Notes
- Mechanical lifts available in every other patient room
- Emphasis on hourly rounding and responsiveness
- Unit typically has multiple discharges and admissions daily; success requires strong time management, good attendance, teamwork, compassion, and cultural sensitivity (serves diverse populations including Spanish, Karen, Burmese)
