Registered Nurse (PCU) - Travel Assignment

Location: Hermitage, Tennessee
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Unit and Work Environment

• Unit: Progressive Care Unit (PCU)
• Beds: Two units with 34 and 25 beds respectively
• Patient Ratios:

  • Days: 1:4 to 1:5
  • Nights: 1:5 to 1:6
• Staffing:

  • 3 techs on larger unit, 2 techs on smaller unit when fully staffed
• Equipment used:

  • Bipaps, high flow oxygen, Vapotherm
  • Alaris pumps, cardiac drips, heparin drips, insulin drips
  • Peritoneal dialysis, wound vacs (with wound care)
• Documentation system: Meditech
• Scheduling:

  • 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each
  • Every other weekend required
  • Self-scheduling with 4-week schedules
• Floating: May float between PCU units or to med-surg floors
• Patient care expectations:

  • Hourly rounding on days, every 2 hours on nights
  • Use of AIDET communication and maintaining communication boards

Required Qualifications

• Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Tennessee
• Minimum 2 years of experience in Progressive Care Unit (PCU), with PCU experience within the last year
• Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
• Current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification
• Current ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) certification
• Experience with cardiac drips, insulin drips, and heparin drips

Procedures Performed on Unit

• Peritoneal dialysis
• Thoracentesis
• Paracentesis
• Chest tube insertions
• Dobhoff/NG tube insertions
• Central line dressing changes
• Wound vac troubleshooting

• Dress code: Black scrubs required
• Team environment described as "care like family" with strong teamwork
• Most travelers extend their contracts after the first assignment on PCU
• Utilization of techs to assist with patient care

Shift and Hours

• 36 hours per week
• 12-hour shifts, 3 shifts per week
• Every other weekend required
