Job Opportunity: Hospice Registered Nurse
Location: Charlotte, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
Provide hospice nursing care primarily to geriatric patients with a prognosis of six months or less to live. Work setting includes home health, hospice, and skilled nursing environments.
Schedule & Work Details
- Shift: Day shift, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM (5 days a week, 8 hours per day, 40 hours per week)
- Call: On-call rotation Friday, Saturday, Sunday from 8 PM to 8 AM; occasional volunteer coverage for weeknight call Monday-Thursday
- Float: None required
- Average daily census: 63 patients, approximately 5 visits per day
- Orientation: 40 hours plus additional hospital orientation
- Scrubs: Not provided; navy blue attire required
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina
- Minimum 2 years of hospice nursing experience, including hospice experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- Experience in home health settings
- Skilled nursing experience
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with death pronouncement, counseling, spiritual needs assessment, perideath family care, and postmortem care
- Knowledge of ethical and legal issues such as advanced directives, medical futility, organ donation, palliative sedation, and withholding/withdrawing treatment
- Skills in equianalgesic opioid dosing and PCA pump management
- Phlebotomy and IV management skills including starting and maintaining IVs and care of peripheral and central lines
- Experience with Durable Medical Equipment (DME) authorization
- Symptom management of ascites
- Epic electronic health record experience, especially in home health hospice settings (preferred)
Additional Requirements & Information
- Prior travel experience not required; first-time travelers accepted
- No return-to-office (RTO) after booking allowed; call-offs or additional RTO may lead to cancellation
- Patient population primarily geriatric with terminal diagnoses
- Use of EPIC Remote Client and SBAR communication method
- Mileage reimbursement at IRS standard rates
- Interview required via Zoom prior to offer
Compliance & Documentation Requirements
Candidates must provide and maintain the following:
- Valid professional RN license and NURSYS verification
- Background check within 6 months prior to start
- Drug screening (9-panel, within 6 months)
- Immunizations and health documents including:
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year (or documentation of past positive TB)
- Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B immunizations or titers
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption during flu season
- Certifications: BLS required; ACLS or others as applicable (not specifically required here)
- Completion of facility-specific orientation and education modules (including medication safety and confidentiality agreements)
- Photo for badge (passport-style, solid white background, business attire) required immediately after contract signing
- Completion of competency exams and medication/pharmacology competency as per travel agency standards
- Compliance with facility policies including tobacco-free campus and annual mandatory education if applicable
Important Notes
- Candidates must complete all required documentation and training prior to start to avoid delays
- Facility does not provide scrubs; navy blue attire is required
- Call schedule includes weekend overnight on-call shifts approximately every 4-5 weeks
- No float pool requirement
