Description
Registered Nurse (RN) – Medsurg
Location: Oakes, North Dakota
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit & Patient Population
- Medsurg unit with 20 beds
- Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:5
- Common patient diagnoses: Falls, Congestive Heart Failure (CHF), bowel obstruction, Atrial Fibrillation (A-fib), Swingbed patients, and others
- Critical Access Hospital environment requiring versatility and teamwork
Shift & Scheduling
- 12-hour shifts: 7a-7p or 7p-7a (Nights)
- Block scheduling available depending on staffing needs
- Schedule posted 6 weeks in advance
- Weekend requirement: every 3rd weekend or more if desired
- Holiday shifts included in rotation if available
- No on-call or standby requirements
- Floating to ER to assist as needed (flexibility appreciated)
Required Certifications & Skills
- BLS (AHA), ACLS (AHA), PALS (AHA)
- NIHSS and TNCC if working in ER (preferred but not mandatory)
- Confident in nursing assessments, infusion pump use, medication administration
- Strong social skills, teamwork, and reliability required
- ER experience preferred but first-time travelers are welcome
Clinical Responsibilities
- RNs titrate drips including Insulin, Heparin, Levophed, and set rate Amiodarone
- Nurses read and document telemetry strips using Mindray monitors (8 units); no telemetry techs on unit
- Manage respiratory equipment including Hamilton C1 ventilator with CPAP and BiPAP, high-flow oxygen; ventilated patients are not kept on unit
- Respiratory treatments administered by nurses
- CNAs and PCTs assist with vital signs, charting, intake/output, and activities of daily living (ADLs)
Orientation & Support
- Unit-specific orientation available, typically 3-6 shifts depending on staffing
- Charge nurse present 24/7 but does not take patient assignments; covers ER as well
- No house supervisor; nursing supervisor available Monday-Friday
Additional Notes
- Experience in critical access facilities is appreciated
- The unit culture is collaborative and family-like, requiring staff to wear many hats
- Scrubs required, no specific color mandated
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Dakota
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Minimum 2 years of Med Surg nursing experience, including experience within the last year
- BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- ACLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- PALS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
