Description
Registered Nurse (ICU Med Surg)
Location: Omaha, Nebraska
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: 12-hour day shifts (06:30–18:30)
Hours per Week: 36 hours guaranteed
Unit and Patient Population
- Med Surg ICU with 34 beds
- Nurse-to-patient ratios:
- ICU: 1:1–2
- PCU: 1:4–5
- Med Surg: 1:5–6
- Patient types include adults and pediatrics over 15 years old
- Common diagnoses: neuro surgery, respiratory failure, ARDS, MODS, sepsis, stroke, cardiogenic shock, renal failure (CRRT), general surgery, psych/OD, GI bleeds, cancer surgeries (e.g., esophagectomy), internal chemo administration
- Equipment used: CVPs, arterial lines, Swan-Ganz catheters, EV-1000, ICP monitoring, Zoll Thermoguard (hypothermia protocol), Bell Mont rapid transfuser
Job Responsibilities
- Titrate drips including vasopressors, paralytics, narcotics, sedation, and antiarrhythmics
- Read and interpret cardiac telemetry strips (Draeger heart monitoring system) without telemetry tech support
- Float to all inpatient units except Maternity and NICU
- Participate as charge nurse when assigned, including attending rapid response teams and codes
- Collaborate with attendings, fellows, residents, and student providers in a fast-paced tertiary hospital environment
Orientation and Scheduling
- Unit-specific orientation: 2 shifts
- Scheduling is manager-assigned based on unit needs (no self-scheduling)
- Weekend requirement: every other weekend
- Holiday requirement: 2 out of 3 major holidays or every other holiday as needed
- Dress code: Navy blue scrubs
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years recent ICU experience
- Certifications: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS
- Valid driver’s license required at time of application (used to verify candidate is within 50-mile radius)
- Must pass a 90% score on a pass/fail open book skills exam during orientation
- Artificial nails are prohibited in all patient care areas
Additional Notes
- Candidates cannot be currently employed full time, part time, or PRN with any facility associated with a specific large healthcare system within a 50-mile radius
- Return to office (RTO) required within 7 days of contract start; no additional RTO extensions allowed
- Successful nurses demonstrate critical thinking, positive attitude, teamwork, and willingness to ask questions and help others
