Description
ICU Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Job – Columbus, Ohio
Position Overview
- Role: Critical Care Float Pool Registered Nurse (ICU)
- Shift: Night shifts, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
- Total Hours: 36 hours per week
- Schedule: Weekend nights (Friday/Saturday) plus an additional day
- Float Pool: Nurses will float among various ICUs based on staffing and patient acuity, including:
- Neuro ICU
- Surgical ICUs
- Medical ICUs (MICU x2)
- Cardiology/Diagnostics
- Cardiovascular ICU (CVICU)
- Surgical ICU (SICU) / Medical ICU (MICU) / Neuro Critical Care Unit (NCCU)
- Float Policy: Must float within units of equivalent or lower acuity
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Ohio
- Minimum 2 years of ICU (Intensive Care Unit) experience, including ICU experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Current certifications issued by the American Heart Association:
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
- Basic Life Support (BLS)
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Experience with telemetry monitoring
- Ventilator management experience
- Proficiency with Epic electronic health record system
Contract Length
- Approximately 13 weeks
Background and Compliance Requirements
- 7-year criminal background check required within 90 days of start, including:
- Social Security trace
- Counties lived/worked
- Nationwide search
- Sex offender registry
- Motor Vehicle Record (if driving is part of the job)
- FBI and BCI fingerprinting results must be obtained prior to adjudication
- Fingerprinting:
- Ohio BCI & FBI fingerprinting required within 1 year of start
- New fingerprinting required if break in service exceeds 90 days or prior results are older than 1 year
- Fingerprinting must be completed using specific state codes
- Pending background check attestation required if fingerprint results are pending at start
- Monthly monitoring through workforce monitoring systems
Education Requirements
- Graduate of an accredited nursing program (accreditation by CCNE, ACEN, or NLN CNEA)
- Verification of nursing education required
- Official transcripts or diplomas required (no unofficial transcripts accepted)
Competency and Testing Requirements
- Dysrhythmia/EKG Competency Exam:
- Required within 1 year of start and updated annually
- Minimum passing score: 76%
- Remediation process available with up to 3 attempts
- Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam required prior to start
- Unit-specific competency exams may be required
Health and Immunization Requirements
- Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming good health and freedom from contagious disease
- Immunizations and/or titers required:
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (adult dose after age 11/12)
- Negative TB test (PPD, QGold, or TSPOT) within 1 year or chest x-ray if positive
- TB questionnaire required annually
- Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella: 2 MMR vaccines or positive titer
- Hepatitis B: Titer or 3-vaccine series (declination accepted)
- Varicella: 2 vaccines or positive titer (medical exemption requires documentation)
- Seasonal flu vaccine or declination during flu season (10/1 - 3/31); mask required if declining
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start (includes amphetamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, cannabinoids, cocaine, methadone, methaqualone, opiates, PCP, propoxyphene)
- COVID-19 vaccination strongly recommended but not required
Additional Requirements
- Two professional references required; at least one must be from a manager or formal leadership (charge nurse acceptable as second reference)
- Employment application and skills checklist required
- Annual review and acknowledgment of dress code, hand hygiene, ethics, and compliance policies
- Fraud, Waste, and Abuse training certificate required prior to start and updated annually
- Orientation safety manual acknowledgment required annually

- Prior travel experience is not explicitly required for this position.
- Nurses must be prepared to float across multiple ICU units with varying acuity.
- All certifications must be current and verifiable.
- Compliance with fingerprinting and background check protocols is strictly enforced.
