Registered Nurse (RN) – MedSurg

Location: Keyser, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights
Hours: 12-hour shifts, approximately 36 hours per week

Unit Overview

• 21-bed Medical-Surgical unit with an average census of 15-16 patients
• Nurse-to-patient ratio typically 1:5; may occasionally go to 1:6 but is discouraged
• Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) assist with a ratio of about 1:5, sometimes managing 7-8 patients
• Common patient diagnoses include CHF, COPD, Diabetes Mellitus, Hypertension, post-op orthopedic, and laparoscopic cholecystectomy patients
• Telemetry monitoring is frequent; nurses read their own telemetry strips
• Respiratory equipment includes CPAP

Required Certifications & Skills

• BLS (Basic Life Support) – AHA certified
• ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) – AHA certified
• NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale) certification
• Ability to read dysrhythmias
• No requirement to titrate drips (e.g., Heparin is a common drip but set rate)

Orientation & Scheduling

• Unit-specific orientation includes meeting with HR on the first day and EPIC training if needed
• Block scheduling allowed as able but not guaranteed
• Weekend shifts required as needed
• No holiday shifts required
• No call or standby requirements
• No floating to other units required
• Dress code: Any color scrubs allowed

Additional Requirements

• Must submit a copy of an unexpired driver’s license with application
• Any licensing issues must be disclosed at time of submission
• 50-mile radius rule applies for candidate submissions

Leadership & Support

• Daytime charge nurse and night shift house supervisor do not take patient assignments but assist with admissions and discharges

Experience

• Minimum 10 years of MedSurg nursing experience required

This position is suitable for experienced MedSurg RNs comfortable with telemetry and managing a variety of common medical and post-op patients in a small hospital setting.
