Description
Registered Nurse – BICU (Columbus, Ohio) Travel/Contract Position
Unit & Patient Population
- 22 beds (16 rooms), average daily census ~20
- Adult and geriatric patients
- Common cases: burns, plastic/reconstructive surgery, urology, gynecology, ENT, oral/maxillofacial surgeries
- Special procedures: burn dressings, flap checks, leech therapy
- Floating within the hospital system required
Shift Details
- 12-hour night shifts: 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM
- Every other or every third weekend required
- Weekly hours: 36
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Ohio
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) / Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Minimum 2 years of burn experience, including burn ICU experience
- Burn experience within the last year
- Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience
- BLS (Basic Life Support) certification issued by the American Heart Association
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification issued by the American Heart Association
Documentation & Systems
- EPIC electronic health record documentation
- Pyxis medication dispensing system
Background & Credentialing Requirements
- 7-year criminal background check within 90 days of start, including SS trace, counties lived/worked, nationwide check, sex offender registry, and motor vehicle record if driving is required
- FBI and BCI fingerprinting required using specific code; must be completed within 1 year of start
- Education verification: graduate of an accredited nursing program (CCNE, ACEN, or NLN CNEA)
- State license verification within 30 days of start
- NURSYS verification required for RN license
- Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG monitoring
- Pending background check attestation required if fingerprint results are pending at start
Competency & Certification Exams
- Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam prior to start
- Unit-specific competency exam required
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required within 1 year of start and updated annually (minimum passing score 76%)
- Orientation Safety Manual acknowledgment required annually
Health & Immunization Requirements
- Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming good health and free of contagious disease
- Negative TB test (PPD, QGold, or TSPOT) within 1 year or chest x-ray if positive; TB questionnaire required annually
- Tdap vaccine (adult dose after age 11/12) required; exemptions not allowed for those working with infants or pregnant patients
- 2 MMR vaccines or positive titers for Rubeola (measles), Mumps, and Rubella; boosters required if low titer and no vaccine proof
- Varicella: 2 vaccines or positive titer required unless medically exempted with documentation
- Hepatitis B titer or 3-vaccine series; signed declination acceptable
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start (includes amphetamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, cannabinoids, cocaine, methadone, methaqualone, opiates, PCP, propoxyphene)
- Seasonal flu vaccine or declination required during flu season (Oct 1 – Mar 31); mask required if declining
- COVID-19 vaccination not required but strongly recommended; proof of primary vaccination collected if available
References & History
- Two professional references required; at least one must be from a manager/director or formal leadership role (charge RN acceptable as second reference)
- Employment application required, including education details for nursing candidates
- Skills checklist required
Additional Notes
- Parking permits available for agency staff (costs and options subject to change)
- Fraud, Waste, and Abuse training certificate required prior to start and updated annually
- Ethics and compliance policies must be reviewed and acknowledged annually for new contracts
- Dress code and hand hygiene policy acknowledgment required for contracts signed May 19, 2025, and beyond
Contract Length: Approximately 13 weeks (3 months)
