Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse - Labor & Delivery
Location
- Kearney, Nebraska
Assignment Details
- Contract length: 13 weeks
- Shift: Nights
- Hours per shift: 12 hours (6pm to 6am)
- Hours per week: 36
- Weekend requirement: Every 3rd weekend (potentially every other depending on need)
- Holidays: One major and one minor holiday required
- Orientation: 1-2 days floor-specific orientation
- Floating: NICU (for feeders and growers only)
- Up to 2 additional mandatory shifts every 6 weeks
Unit Information
- Labor & Delivery unit with 10 spacious, private LDRP rooms, 2 antepartum rooms, 1 OR suite, and 2 on-call rooms for doctors
- Average births: 50 per month (600 per year)
- No nursery; newborns stay in bassinets in mothers' rooms with skin-to-skin care philosophy
- Team includes Charge RN, Lactation Counselor, Unit Secretary/notary, Maternity Educator, Nurse Aides/OB techs (day and night shifts depending on census)
- Telemetry monitoring via GE centrally monitored system
- OB/Neonatologist in-house; anesthesia on call with 20-minute response time
- Respiratory Therapy available 24/7
- Pharmacy on call at night, working toward 24/7 coverage within a year
- Common patient diagnoses: pregnancies at 32 weeks or more (earlier gestations transferred out), no VBAC, patients on magnesium sulfate or insulin
- Strong emphasis on teamwork and patient safety (recognized as a Safe Sleep Champion)
Patient Ratios
- Couplet care: 1 nurse to 3 patients
- Laboring patients: 1 nurse to 1 patient
Required Experience & Skills
- C-section experience required (circulating role)
- Strong IV skills required
- Experience with EPIC charting is a plus
Required Certifications & Licenses
- Current Nebraska RN license or compact RN license
- BLS (American Heart Association or American Red Cross)
- ACLS (American Heart Association or American Red Cross)
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
- Fetal Heart Monitor (FHM) certification preferred
Additional Notes
- Mothers labor and deliver in one bed; babies never leave their mothers' sides
- Scrub color provided by hospital
- Charge nurse role available
- Floating primarily to NICU for specific patient care (feeders and growers)
- Strong teamwork culture within the department
