Description
Registered Nurse (ER RN) - North Dakota
Location
- City: Hettinger, North Dakota
Contract Length
- 16 weeks
Work Schedule
- 12-hour shifts, rotating Day/Night
- Approximately 36 hours per week
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend or possibly every third weekend
- Holiday requirement: Every other holiday
- Low census on-call for extra shifts
- Self-scheduling with manager oversight; block scheduling considered case-by-case
Unit and Environment
- Department: Emergency Room
- Trauma Level IV, Acute Stroke Ready Hospital
- 2 ER rooms with 1 overflow room
- No Fast Track or separate holding area
- No separate Psych/seclusion rooms
- No in-house security; 911 for sheriff response
- Average patient volume: 4-5 patients per day
- Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1 charge nurse per 2 patients
- Float to Medical-Surgical units as needed
- Orientation: 1 day and 1 night shift on unit
- Scrub color: Any color/pattern allowed; closed-toe shoes required
Patient Care and Responsibilities
- Common patient types: Acute illnesses, lacerations, orthopedic injuries, trauma, cardiac cases (STEMI patients shipped out)
- Common drips administered: Heparin, Cardizem, Nitro
- Respiratory therapy duties performed by RN (no RT coverage 24/7)
- RN responsible for ABGs, breathing treatments, EKGs, and RT equipment setup (CRNA assists with vents)
- RN reads telemetry strips; no monitor techs on site
- Radiology on call for X-ray and CT; may require RN assistance
- Phlebotomy draws labs; RN usually does not draw labs
- Charge nurse oversees ER patients without direct assignment
Required Certifications
- Basic Life Support (BLS)
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)
- National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
- Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) preferred
Experience
- Prior ER nursing experience in similar settings required
Additional Notes
- Nurse aids (CNAs) from med/surg available to assist
- EMS staff may assist on request
