Medical Surgical Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)
Location: Springfield, Illinois
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (18:45 - 07:15)
Average Daily Census: 22 patients
Hours per Week: 36
Job Summary
Provide nursing care on a medical-surgical unit in an acute care, Level I trauma, Magnet-designated hospital. The role requires working every other weekend and floating within scope to other units as needed.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Illinois
- Minimum 2 years of Medical-Surgical nursing experience, with experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
- Experience with Rapid Response Teams
- Feeding tube care and management
- Pre/Post Hemodialysis management and renal failure care
- Blood product administration
- Central line blood draws
- Peripheral line care and management
- PICC line management
- Patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) experience
- High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC) experience
- Non-invasive airway management
- Oxygen face mask administration
- Pre/Post thoracic surgery care
- Tracheostomy management
- Orthopedic trauma experience
Schedule & Work Conditions
- Night shift, 3 twelve-hour shifts per week
- Work every other weekend
- Floating to other units within scope as needed
- Open to discussing block schedule requests with manager
- No on-call requirement
- Local candidates accepted without radius restrictions
- Return-to-Office (RTO) ideally no more than 5 days

- Acute Care Hospital with 562 staffed beds
- Level I Trauma Center
- Magnet designated facility
- Charting system: Cerner
- Parking permit required but no cost
Required Pre-Employment & Onboarding Documents
- Valid/current US Driver’s License or State ID
- Background checks covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years, including:
- SSN Trace, National Criminal, Sex Offender, FACIS Level 3
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days prior to start
- Illinois-specific searches including Department of Corrections, Most Wanted, and Violent Offender registries within 30 days prior to start
- Primary source verifications for license and certifications (e.g., NURSYS for RN)
- Competency exam required for all clinical candidates
- Photo for badge (color, mid-shoulders up, plain background) within one week of signing
- Code of Conduct acknowledgment within 7 days of contract signing
- Parking permit form within 7 days of contract signing (if applicable)
Health & Safety Requirements
- Physical exam within 1 year of start, signed by appropriate healthcare provider, confirming ability to perform job functions without restrictions
- Fit mask test required (3M 1860 small/regular, 1870, or 1870+ masks acceptable)
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year of start
- TB questionnaire updated annually
- Immunizations or documented immunity/declination for:
- Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella (2 MMR vaccines or positive titer)
- Hepatitis B vaccine series or positive titer
- Varicella vaccine or positive titer
- 9-panel drug screen within 30 days of start (includes amphetamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, cocaine, methadone, opiates, etc.)
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required by November 30 annually

- Two professional references required for all direct travel, allied, per diem, and acute care clinical candidates
- Skills checklist required for all clinical and allied candidates
