Description

Registered Nurse (RN) – 3N Cardiac Telemetry Unit

Location: Parkersburg, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights (12-hour shifts, 1900-0730)
Hours per Week: 36 hours


Unit Overview

  • 43-bed Cardiac Telemetry unit (semi-private rooms; 9-10 private rooms)
  • Average nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:5 (can flex up to 1:6)
  • Unit serves as the central monitor station for the entire North Tower
  • Common patient diagnoses: post heart catheterization, TR Bands, congestive heart failure (CHF), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), post pacemaker (no external pacers), medical management or awaiting CABG consult, arrhythmias

Required Certifications

  • BLS (Basic Life Support) – AHA certified
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) – AHA certified
  • Must have an unexpired driver’s license

Experience & Skills

  • Must be able to read cardiac strips confidently
  • Comfortable managing patients with cardiac telemetry diagnoses listed above
  • RN responsible for titrating Heparin drips; Cardizem and Amiodarone are not titrated by RN
  • Occasional titration of Lasix or Bumex may be required

Staffing & Support

  • Monitor technicians present on unit
  • Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) assist with ADLs, fingerstick blood sugars, and EKGs when able
  • PCT ratios goal: 1:8, can flex up to 1:12-18 depending on staffing
  • Charge Nurse coverage 24/7; night charge nurse always takes patient assignment
  • Travelers may be asked to take charge nurse role if comfortable

Patient Care Equipment

  • Occasional use of High Flow oxygen in certain rooms
  • Bipap and Cpap used for supportive therapy only; patients dependent on these typically transferred to higher acuity units

Scheduling & Work Expectations

  • 12-hour shifts (0700-1930 or 1900-0730) with self-scheduling allowed
  • Block scheduling accommodated if unit needs are met
  • Weekend requirement: every other weekend for travelers (permanent staff work every 3rd weekend)
  • Night weekend shifts: Friday through Monday; Day weekend shifts: Saturday and Sunday
  • Holiday coverage primarily by permanent staff; travelers may be required if unit needs dictate
  • Rare call or standby may be required depending on census

Floating & Orientation

  • Travelers participate in float rotation; may float to other hospital units including ICU (rare) and Stepdown, only within skillset
  • Orientation includes 1 day computer training, 1 day floor shadowing with preceptor, then independent on day 3

Additional Notes

  • Unit is fast-paced with approximately 8-12 admissions and discharges daily
  • RNs expected to perform their own admissions and discharges but encouraged to ask for help if needed
  • Teamwork is highly emphasized; staff support each other consistently
  • Dress code: Royal blue scrubs; scrub jackets allowed but must be actual scrub jackets (no hoodies or sweatshirts)
  • Unit is accustomed to new graduates and willing to provide teaching and support

Required Qualifications Summary
