Medical Surgical Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Job
Location: Charleston, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
- Work on a 29-bed adult medical-surgical oncology unit including palliative care, family education, urology, and telemetry patients.
- Night shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7 PM - 7 AM).
- Every other weekend required.
- Patient ratios: 5-6:1 at night.
- Float within scope to meet facility needs.
- Open to accommodating blocked schedule requests.
- 36 hours guaranteed per week.
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in West Virginia
- Minimum 2 years of medical-surgical and telemetry nursing experience, with experience within the last year
- BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- ONCC or ONS certification
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Skills and experience with:
- Central line draws
- Ports access
- PCA pumps
- Bone marrow aspiration assistance
- Pleurx chest tubes
- Chemotherapy administration
Shift & Schedule Details
- Night shift (7 PM - 7 AM), 3 shifts per week (36 hours).
- Every other weekend required.
- Holiday time-off requests limited to no more than 1 of the 3 major holidays.
Facility & Work Environment
- Adult population with medical-surgical oncology focus.
- Includes telemetry and urology patients.
- Charting system: Cerner.
- Scrub color: Royal Blue/White for RNs.
- Free parking for travelers.
- Level IV Trauma Center and major teaching hospital.
Health & Safety Requirements
- Flu vaccine required during flu season (October 1 - March 31) unless medically exempt with documentation.
- COVID-19 vaccination not required.
- Annual fit mask testing required (3M N95 1860 Small or Regular and Aura 9205 only). PAPR accommodations available if fit test failed.
- Negative TB test within 3 months of start (2-step skin test or preferred QGold/TSpot).
- Tdap vaccination required (given after age 11). Medical or religious exemptions accepted with approved documentation.
- Required immunizations or titers: Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B (with specific protocols for titers and boosters).
- Drug screen within 30 days of start, including a comprehensive panel (no placeholders or pending results accepted).
- Physical exam within 1 year of start, signed by a licensed provider, confirming good health and no limitations.
Onboarding & Compliance
- Background check: 7-year criminal history within 30 days of start, including SSN trace, sex offender search, national and international checks if applicable.
- Required annual background screenings: EPLS/SAM, HHS/OIG, Sex Offender Search (must be completed independently and updated annually).
- Pass/fail testing required for nursing candidates only: EKG exam, medication calculation exam, blood administration test (two attempts allowed).
- Competency exams required, including medication/pharmacology competency and color blindness testing.
- Annual stroke education CEUs required depending on unit assignment (4-6 hours).
- Orientation is 2 days (Thursday and Friday) including Cerner Infusion Management training.
- Multiple facility-specific documents must be reviewed, signed, and returned prior to start (dress code, blood administration policy, math calculation packet, EKG review, time and attendance, medical release, vaccination exemption forms, state liability and time gap forms).
- Inservice training modules must be completed 1 week prior to start (approx. 4 hours). Returning candidates may not need to redo if not expired.
Additional Notes
- Candidates without oncology experience may be considered if strong in medical-surgical skills.
- Candidates cannot return as travelers within 2 years of last permanent employment at this facility.
- 100-mile radius rule applies for candidate location; exceptions require facility approval.
- Valid driver’s license and social security card required for submission.
This position is ideal for experienced medical-surgical RNs with oncology or telemetry skills seeking a travel contract in a major teaching hospital environment with a focus on adult oncology care.
