Job Opportunity: Obstetrics Manager (Temporary, Days)

Location: Dubuque, Iowa


Position Overview

  • Role: Nurse Manager in Obstetrics (Maternity services)
  • Employment Type: Temporary
  • Shift: Days
  • Contract Length: 16 weeks
  • Exempt position
  • Nurse Manager responsible for scheduling and overseeing approximately 47 FTEs including Techs and RNs
  • Expected to work 1-2 of 3 upcoming summer holidays (Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day) unless the unit is closed
  • Rarely may be asked to step into clinical cases in extreme situations (not an expectation)
  • After-hours support includes calls for clarifications, unit capacity issues, provider or patient situation concerns

Unit Information

  • Bed Size:
    • Maternity: 16 beds
    • Nursery: 12 beds
    • NICU: 4 beds
    • C-section suite: 1 bed
    • Overflow rooms available
  • Patient Types: Antepartum, Maternal-Baby (MB), Newborn, OB/GYN, NICU
  • Delivery Volume: 50-60 births per month
  • Level 2 maternal/neonatal center
  • Manages high-risk patients including magnesium sulfate, insulin drips, Foley catheters, and Pitocin inductions
  • Transfers infants less than 34 weeks gestation after stabilization
  • Emergency drills conducted monthly for maternal and neonatal sides
  • Newborn codes handled by unit staff/providers; other emergencies supported by Rapid Response and Medical Emergency Teams
  • No dedicated charge/resource nurses; charge nurses also have patient assignments
  • Strong teamwork culture with self-sufficient staffing and exceptional patient care

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 24 months recent/current experience as a Maternity/Obstetrics Nurse Manager or Interim Leadership in Labor & Delivery, Maternal-Baby, Postpartum, NICU, or Nursery settings
  • At least 15 months of interim leadership or nurse manager experience specifically in Maternity/Obstetrics/Labor Delivery/MB/OB/PP (supervisor experience alone does not qualify)
  • Must have completed at least one prior travel contract within the last 15 months (no first-time travelers)
  • Active Iowa nursing license or multistate compact license at time of application
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required; Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) preferred
  • EPIC electronic medical record (EMR) experience required
  • Experience with glucose, magnesium, and Pitocin drips highly preferred
  • Valid driver’s license required
  • Professional references from charge/supervisor/nurse manager/director/CNO/COO within the last 24 months preferred

Work Conditions & Additional Details

  • Normal workweek: 36-40 hours; overtime billable after 40 hours
  • Night and holiday overtime multipliers apply (not detailed here)
  • Call back and on-call compensation applies (details excluded)
  • Nurse Manager will have visibility into unit budgeting and department financials but director inputs final data
  • No local candidates within 90 miles allowed to apply due to policy
  • Employee separation policy restricts past employees from working travel contracts in this market within 12 months unless prior travel was not FTE or PRN
