Description

Registered Nurse – Labor and Delivery

Location: Bangor, Maine
Shift: 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM (Night Shift)
Hours per Week: 36
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Overview

  • Immediate start required.
  • Work in a Level III NICU setting with a Newborn Nursery.
  • Facility averages approximately 1800 deliveries per year.
  • Typical daily duties include managing about 4 scheduled events such as C-sections and versions.
  • Labor & Delivery and Mother-Baby units are physically separate but adjacent.
  • Rooming-in model for mother and baby care.
  • Covers a large geographic referral area, including high-acuity NICU cases.

Patient Types and Common Diagnoses

  • Pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH), gestational diabetes (GDM), pre-eclampsia, eclampsia, HELLP syndrome.
  • Shoulder dystocia, postpartum hemorrhage, multiples, fetal loss, drug addiction, cervical ripening.
  • Newborn care responsibilities include documenting feeds, vitals, and assessments when mother remains on unit for continuous surveillance.

Patient Ratios

  • Cervical Ripening: 1:1 to 1:3
  • Laboring: 1:1 to 1:3
  • Active Labor: 1:1
  • Couplet/Postpartum/Antepartum: 3 mother/baby couplets or 3 Antepartum/NICU moms

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in Labor & Delivery.
  • Must have completed at least one prior assignment at a facility comparable in size and acuity (no first-time travelers accepted).
  • Licensure: Registered Nurse (RN) with current certifications:
    • BLS (Basic Life Support)
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
    • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
    • Intermediate or Advanced Fetal Heart Monitoring (FHM)
    • MOAB (Management of Obstetric Emergencies and Bleeding)
  • Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) staff on unit are nationally certified and BLS certified.

Skills and Responsibilities

  • Titrate Pitocin, perform fetal scalp electrode placement, cervical exams.
  • Assist CRNA with epidural placement.
  • Manage insulin and magnesium drips.
  • Manage shoulder dystocia emergencies.
  • Circulate in C-section OR and/or receive baby.
  • Neonatal resuscitation and assist with intrauterine pressure catheter (IUPC) placement and monitoring.
  • Provide newborn care including lactation support and safe skin-to-skin protocols.
  • Charge nurse experience is valued; travelers should disclose any prior charge nurse roles.

Unit Support and Team

  • Unit secretary and bed flow facilitator available during day shifts.
  • CST coverage 24/7.
  • Charge nurse coverage 24/7.
  • Phlebotomist available for lab draws after IV placement.
  • Anesthesia available 24/7.
  • House supervisor and respiratory therapist available 24/7.
  • OB providers on call 24/7.
  • Family medicine residents with attending backup in-house 24/7.
  • Certified midwife may be on call with backup for operative deliveries.
  • RN support for delivery care.
  • Remote fetal monitoring at bedside and nurse’s station.

Technology and Equipment

  • Electronic Medical Record (EMR): Cerner.
  • Fetal monitoring system: Fetal Link.
  • IV pumps: Alaris.
  • Medication dispensing: Pyxis.

Orientation

  • 1 day with HR/preceptor.
  • 1 day OR/PACU training.
  • 1 day preceptor shadowing on night shift if contracted for nights.

Scheduling and Work Conditions

  • Weekend rotation: work at least 4 out of every 8 weekends (may be consecutive).
  • No mandatory call, but call pick-up may be available.
  • Holiday rotation required.
  • Manager approval required for time off requests.
  • Scrubs provided on site (navy color), with 6 credits allotted for scrub machine use.
  • Free parking available on site.

Floating

  • May float to Mother-Baby unit, including Antepartum, Postpartum, or occasionally Mother-Baby.
  • Newborn Nursery RN handles 24-hour labs.

Additional Compliance and Documentation Requirements

  • Current certifications and clearances including but not limited to:
    • Annual core competencies, criminal background check, drug screen, immunizations (Hep B, MMR, Varicella, TDAP), N95 fit testing, physical exam, and others as per facility policy.

Note: Prior travel experience is required; candidates must have completed at least one prior assignment at a comparable facility.
