Registered Nurse (Med Surg/Telemetry) - 13 Week Contract

Location: Quincy, Illinois

Job Overview

• Float RN position on a Med Surg/Telemetry inpatient surgical unit (3rd floor)
• 48 beds across two buildings
• Primary care nursing model frequently used
• Night shift, 12-hour shifts (7 PM start), approximately 36 hours per week
• Weekend requirement: every other weekend (Saturday and Sunday)
• Holiday rotation included with core staff
• No call or standby requirements
• Floating limited to like units; if floated to higher acuity, work as support without patient load

Patient Population & Common Diagnoses

• Neuro surgeries: laminectomy, cervical fusion
• Orthopedic: total joint replacements (hips/knees)
• General surgery: ostomies, hernia repair, belly surgery
• Vascular: fem-pop bypass, dialysis catheter insertions, BKA/AKA
• Dialysis patients located on the unit
• Other conditions: sepsis, chronic pain management (narcotics), urgent OR cases
• Use of PICC lines, TPN, lipids, PCA pumps, epidurals, IV antibiotics

Required Qualifications

• Valid RN license in Illinois
• Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
• Minimum 1 year of surgical nursing experience, including total joint experience
• Minimum 1 year of telemetry experience within the last year
• BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
• NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
• Experience with Epic electronic health record system
• Understanding and management of PCA pumps and narcotic administration
• Knowledge and experience with reversal drugs (Narcan)
• Sepsis management skills
• Experience with TPN and lipids administration

Unit Support & Staffing

• Nurse-to-patient ratios: 1:4-6 (nights), 1:5-6 with LPN support
• Charge nurse on day shift usually a staff nurse; night charge nurse may be house supervisor with smaller patient assignment
• Nurse aides available but may be pulled for sitter duties, especially on night shift
• Respiratory therapy manages CPAP, BiPAP (occasionally), Airvo, and ventilators as needed

Orientation & Scheduling

• Unit-specific orientation: 1-12 hour shift on day of hire plus a 12-14 hour first day for competencies and computer-based modules
• Schedules posted 6 weeks in advance
• No guaranteed block scheduling; scheduling flexibility discussed with leadership

Additional Notes

• Fast-paced environment with heavy patient acuity
• Can expect 8-12 surgical admits and discharges per day on night shift
• Dress code: black scrubs (scrubs provided)
