Registered Nurse (RN) – Med/Surg/Telemetry General

Location: Medford, Oregon
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights (1845-0715)
Shift Length: 12 hours
Hours per Week: 36


Unit Overview

  • Department: Medical-Surgical General Medical
  • Beds: 36 private beds
  • Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:
    • Dayshift: 1:4-5
    • Nightshift: 1:4-6
  • Nurse Aide Ratios: 1:7-9 (days and nights)
  • Telemetry Monitoring: Remote telemetry monitored by tele techs on a separate unit; nurses should understand strip interpretation and lethal rhythms (Phillips monitors)
  • Respiratory Therapy Equipment: No ventilators; CPAP at night for maintenance; high flow oxygen common; occasional BiPAP managed by RT

  • GI issues
  • Pneumonia
  • Cellulitis
  • Renal conditions
  • Congestive Heart Failure (CHF)
  • Diabetes Mellitus (DM)
  • Alcohol withdrawal (ETOH)
  • Electrolyte imbalances
  • Infectious diseases (flu, COVID, meningitis, shingles, C. Diff)
  • General medical patients
  • Psychiatric patients with medical complaints

Required Certifications & Licensure

  • BLS Certification required
  • Non-Oregon licensed RNs may apply and be eligible for a 90-day temporary Oregon license if permanent license is not posted before assignment start

Experience & Skills

  • Must embody values of Excellence, Respect, Honesty, Service, and Teamwork
  • Must comply with care bundles and accept feedback graciously
  • Preferred experience with:
    • De-escalation techniques
    • Chest tubes
    • Heparin drips
    • NG tubes/feeding tubes
  • Occasional titration of drips required (heparin, cardizem); no vasopressors
  • Set rate drips include amiodarone

Orientation & Scheduling

  • Orientation: 12 hours non-billable during first work week (2 shifts of 12 hours)
  • Scheduling: 12-hour shifts; no scheduling requests accommodated for travelers
  • Weekend and holiday requirements are flexible and based on department needs; possibly every other weekend or rotating holidays
  • Travelers fill schedule gaps; no block scheduling
  • Floating: Travelers float first within skill set; may float to other med-surg units, ICU as resource, ER for holds, or as sitter

Work Environment & Policies

  • Call/Standby: May be placed on standby for low census; no additional call required
  • Charge Nurse: 24/7 coverage; typically does not take patient assignments
  • House Supervisor and Critical Care Outreach RN available 24/7
  • Dress Code: Any colored professional scrubs allowed; no visible tattoos above shoulders; only facial piercing allowed is a nose stud; hair must be clean and well-kept
  • Emphasis on teamwork, bedside report, and hourly rounding

  • Local candidates are not accepted; 50-mile radius restriction applies
  • Teamwork is essential on this unit
  • Facility stresses high importance on bedside report and hourly rounding
