Description

Registered Nurse (RN) – Med/Surg/Telemetry General

Location: Medford, Oregon
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights (1845-0715)
Hours: 12-hour shifts, approximately 36 hours per week


Unit Overview

  • Department: Medical-Surgical General Medical with Telemetry
  • Beds: 36 private beds
  • Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:
    • Dayshift: 1:4-5
    • Nightshift: 1:4-6
  • Nurse Aide Ratios: 1:7-9 (both day and night shifts)
  • Remote telemetry monitoring by tele techs on a separate unit (Phillips Monitors)
  • Respiratory Therapy equipment: No ventilators; CPAP at night for maintenance; high flow oxygen common; occasional BiPAP managed by RT
  • Charge nurse available 24/7, typically does not take patient assignments
  • House supervisor and critical care outreach RN available 24/7

Patient Population & Common Diagnoses

  • GI issues, pneumonia, cellulitis, renal problems, congestive heart failure (CHF), diabetes mellitus (DM), alcohol withdrawal (ETOH), electrolyte imbalances
  • Infectious patients including flu, COVID-19, meningitis, shingles, C. difficile
  • General medical patients and psychiatric patients with medical complaints

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • Valid RN license in Oregon
  • Minimum of 2 years of Med Surg / Telemetry nursing experience, including experience within the last year
  • Current BLS certification
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)

Orientation & Scheduling

  • Orientation: 12 hours (2 shifts) of non-billable unit-specific orientation during first work week
  • Scheduling:
    • 12-hour night shifts only (1845-0715)
    • No scheduling requests accommodated for travelers; travelers fill schedule gaps
    • No block scheduling
  • Weekend and holiday coverage: Flexible, based on department needs; possibly every other weekend or more; holiday rotation with core staff possible
  • Call/Standby: May be placed on standby for low census; no additional call required

Additional Information

  • Local candidates not accepted; 50-mile radius restriction applies
  • Travelers are first to float within their skill set; potential float to other med-surg units, ICU as resource, ER for holds, or sitter assignments
  • Dress code: Any colored professional scrubs allowed; no visible tattoos above shoulders; only facial piercing allowed is a nose stud; hair must be clean and well-kept
  • Emphasis on teamwork, bedside report, and hourly rounding

Summary

This is a 13-week night shift RN position on a med-surg telemetry unit caring for a diverse patient population with a variety of medical and infectious conditions. The role requires strong clinical skills, teamwork, and flexibility with scheduling and floating. Orientation and support are provided, but travelers must be prepared for a strict scheduling policy and a 50-mile radius restriction.
