Medical Surgical Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Job
Location: Wilmington, North Carolina
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each, 18:45 - 7:15)
Hours per Week: 36
Job Overview
- Primarily caring for medical-surgical patients with oncology history.
- Patient diagnoses include AKI, Sepsis, Cancer, Septic shock, Pain, Overdose, Malignant Neoplasms, ARF, Encephalopathy, FTT, Diabetic foot ulcers, Heparin drips.
- Administration of chemotherapy/biotherapy via IV, PO, or injection may be required.
- Target nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:6 (may increase during high census).
- Float requirement to similar units and alternate inpatient care locations, including inpatient holding in the ED.
- Call required if called off on a prescheduled shift.
- Every other weekend required.
- Contract staff expected to participate in Storm Team and/or Hurricane Team and may be required to report during catastrophic events or disasters.
- Attendance at monthly staff meetings is required.
Required Skills & Experience
- Valid RN license in North Carolina
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- Minimum 2 years of Med Surg experience, with Med Surg experience within the last year
- Experience in an inpatient setting
- BLS certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) certification
- Experience with accessing ports, central line blood draws, PICC line management
- Experience with chest tubes (Emerson/Pleur-evac)
- Experience with non-invasive airway management
- Orientation Safety Manual Acknowledgement
Preferred Qualifications
- Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) certification.
- Charge nurse experience.
Orientation & Training
- Unit orientation: 24 hours (2 shifts).
- Must pass EKG competency testing prior to start.
- Use of unit systems: PYXIS (medication), EPIC (documentation), SBAR (communication).
- Scrubs: Navy blue and white.
Compliance & Documentation Requirements
- Background check within 6 months for clinical candidates.
- Drug screening (9-panel) within 6 months of start.
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year of start; additional documentation required if past positive TB.
- Required immunizations or titers: Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella. Declinations for Hep B not accepted.
- Flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season (9/1 - 10/31). Exemptions require mask-wearing on campus.
- Physical exam not required for crisis travelers.
- Required certifications: BLS, ONC (Chemotherapy), and others as applicable.
- Medication Safety training and other facility-specific education modules required prior to start.
- Photo for badge required immediately after signing contract (passport style, white background, business attire).
- Must complete confidentiality agreement, hospital policies acknowledgment, and annual compliance training.
- Must complete Non-Novant Health Worker Orientation (approx. 8-10 hours for acute candidates).
Additional Notes
- No Return to Office (RTO) allowed after booking; call-offs or additional RTO may lead to cancellation and Do Not Rehire status.
- Shifts called out must be made up.
- Contract staff may be preassigned to different units as needed during the contract.
- Radiation badge not required for this position.
Summary
This is a night shift travel Registered Nurse position on a medical-surgical oncology unit requiring at least 2 years of inpatient RN experience, chemotherapy certification, and BLS. The role involves caring for complex medical-surgical patients, including chemotherapy administration, with a 1:6 nurse-to-patient ratio. Floating, call, and weekend requirements apply. Orientation and multiple compliance trainings are mandatory before starting. Prior travel experience is not required.
