Registered Nurse (RN) – Progressive Care Unit (PCU) (Days)

Location: Des Moines, Iowa
Employment Type: Temporary
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Work primarily on a Progressive Care Unit with patient types including post-TNK, orthopedic, crani-neurosurgery, laminectomies, and polytrauma.
  • Float across multiple medical-surgical units and campuses.
  • Patient ratio approximately 1:5-6 with a 25-bed unit.
  • Care involves drips/titrations such as heparin gtts, PCAs, and 3% sodium.
  • Use of equipment including lift equipment, telemetry, chest tubes, and Airvo.
  • Required to work 1-2 of 3 upcoming summer holidays (Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day) unless the unit is closed.
  • EMR system used: EPIC.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 24 months of experience in Stepdown, Progressive Care, or Medical-Surgical nursing in a hospital or medical center setting.
  • Experience in neuro/neurology care and orthopedic care required; trauma care experience highly preferred.
  • Experience administering heparin and PCA medications required; experience with 3% sodium preferred.
  • Experience using and reading lift equipment, telemetry, chest tubes, and Airvo required.
  • Must have completed at least one prior travel nursing contract within the last 12 months (no first-time travelers).
  • Active Iowa RN license or compact/multistate license at time of application.
  • Current American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification required; can be obtained during onboarding.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Skills checklist specific to Medical-Surgical or Medical-Surgical/Telemetry discipline required.
  • Professional references or performance evaluations from within the last 24 months preferred.

Additional Information

  • Orientation date provided (June 22).
  • Night shift ACLS certification is a nice-to-have but not required.
  • Work history and resume must clearly demonstrate required experience.
