Description

Registered Nurse – Med Surg Oncology (Travel/Contract)

Location: Columbus, Ohio
Contract Length: 16 weeks


Job Details

  • 12-hour shifts, rotating days and nights (schedule reviewed every 4 weeks; changes not guaranteed)
  • Patient care focus: oncology patients with continuous cardiac monitoring related to chemotherapy, soft tissue malignancies, symptom management, and comorbidity management
  • Emphasis on infection prevention protocols and patient fall prevention
  • Patient ratio: 1 nurse to 4 patients
  • Required to float to units of equivalent or lower acuity

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Ohio
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Minimum 2 years of telemetry experience, including telemetry experience within the last year
  • BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • Experience with Epic electronic health record system
  • Interpretation of dysrhythmias
  • Skills in accessing ports, arterial line management, central line care/management, and PICC line management
  • Ability to assist with chest tube insertion/removal
  • Experience with high flow nasal cannula (HFNC)

Equipment Used

  • B450 monitors with GE telemetry system
  • Bladder scanner
  • Alaris infusion pumps
  • Stryker beds

Certifications & Exams

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) – AHA instructor/provider or RQI accepted
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required within 1 year of start and annually thereafter (minimum passing score 76%)
  • Unit-specific competency exams required
  • Medication test/pharmacology competency exam required prior to start

Background & Compliance Requirements

  • 7-year criminal background check within 90 days of start, including SS trace, counties lived/worked, nationwide check, sex offender registry, and motor vehicle record if driving is required
  • FBI and BCI fingerprinting required within 1 year of start using specific code (3701.881)
  • Pending background check attestation required if fingerprint results are pending at start
  • Education verification: graduate of an accredited nursing program (CCNE, ACEN, or NLN CNEA accreditation)
  • Employment application and skills checklist required
  • Two professional references required (at least one from a manager or formal leadership)

Health & Immunization Requirements

  • Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming good health and free of contagious disease
  • Negative TB test (PPD, QGold, or TSPOT) within 1 year or chest x-ray if positive
  • TB questionnaire required annually in lieu of TB test renewal
  • Adult Tdap vaccination required (no exemptions if working with infants or pregnant patients)
  • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella): 2 vaccines or positive titer; boosters required if low titer and no vaccine proof
  • Varicella: 2 vaccines or positive titer; medical exemptions require documentation
  • Hepatitis B: titer or 3-vaccine series; signed declination acceptable
  • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start (includes amphetamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, cannabinoids, cocaine, methadone, methaqualone, opiates, PCP, propoxyphene)
  • Seasonal flu vaccine or declination during flu season (10/1–3/31); mask required if declining
  • COVID-19 vaccination not required but strongly recommended

Additional Facility Policies

  • Dress code and hand hygiene policy acknowledgment required
  • Confidential Fraud, Waste, and Abuse reporting form and training certificate required (updated annually)
  • Ethics and compliance policies must be reviewed and acknowledged annually
  • Orientation safety manual acknowledgment required annually

Shift Details

  • Day shift: 7:00 AM – 7:30 PM (3 shifts per week)
  • Night shift: 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM (3 shifts per week)
  • Total hours per week: 36

This position offers an opportunity to work in a specialized oncology med-surg setting with a focus on telemetry and complex patient care requiring advanced nursing skills and certifications.
