Description

Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (ER) - Travel Assignment

Location: Bryan, Texas
Assignment Length: 12 weeks
Shift: Nights
Hours: 12-hour shifts, approximately 36 hours per week
Unit: Emergency Room (ER) - will float between two campuses about 16 minutes apart


Facility & Unit Overview

  • Level III Trauma Center and Primary Stroke Center with comprehensive capabilities
  • 30 beds total, including 2 trauma bays and 24 acute care beds
  • Fast Track area called "vertical care" with nurse-to-patient ratios of 1:6-8
  • Separate triage area with a "first eyes nurse" who registers and triages patients; travelers may be assigned here after skills assessment
  • Holds and psych/seclusion rooms are intermixed within the ER
  • Security is in-house 24/7 with an off-duty officer assigned to the ER at all times
  • Average patient volume: ~135 patients per day
  • Common patient types: trauma (ground level falls, MVAs, assaults including gunshot and stabbings), stroke, STEMI, pediatrics (~10-15%), geriatric altered mental status, chest pain, fever, nausea/vomiting
  • Own EMS agency covering 7 counties and helicopter transport available

Required Qualifications

  • Current RN license appropriate for Texas
  • Minimum 2 years of ER nursing experience in a facility with similar patient volume, trauma level, and acuity
  • Must be comfortable managing central lines, massive transfusion protocols (MTP), chest tubes, trauma cases, STEMI, and stroke patients
  • Required certifications: BLS, ACLS, PALS, TNCC, NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
  • Must pass an Advanced Dysrhythmia exam with a minimum score of 83% (up to three attempts allowed before contract signing)

Clinical Skills & Experience

  • Experience with common drips: Diltiazem, Cardene, Nitro, Propofol, Fentanyl, Levophed
  • Familiarity with trauma and acute care interventions including rapid transfusions and intubated patients
  • Ability to monitor telemetry strips independently (PulseCheck or Picis EMR systems used)
  • Experience working alongside respiratory therapists who provide ABGs, breathing treatments, and ventilator support; RNs assist with troubleshooting respiratory equipment
  • Skilled in working with multidisciplinary teams including physicians (MDs 24/7), mid-level providers (NPs/PAs 24/7), and patient care techs

Work Environment & Culture

  • Strong team culture with active Shared Governance and Unit-Based Council involvement
  • Call outs are strongly discouraged and may lead to termination
  • Charge nurse is free-floating but may take patient assignments as needed and responds to codes and rapid responses
  • Patient care techs assist with EKGs, wound care, transport, ADLs, and trauma setup
  • No call or standby requirements
  • Floating may be required to assist at the secondary campus but will not have a dedicated assignment there
  • Scrub color: Navy (including undershirts); scrub jackets optional but must be navy
  • Orientation includes 3 shifts in the ER

Scheduling

  • Every other weekend required
  • Holiday rotation shared with core staff (one major holiday)

Additional Notes

  • This is a travel assignment with prescreening required
  • Candidates must not have been employed (full-time, part-time, or PRN) by any related facility within the past year, though PRN work through outside firms is acceptable
  • 12-hour night shifts, every other weekend schedule, with floating between campuses as needed
