Description
Registered Nurse (RN) – Float / Progressive Care Unit (PCU) (Nights)
Location: Waterloo, Iowa
Employment Type: Temporary
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Overview
- Float nurse assigned primarily to Med Surg with required floating across Med Surg, Behavioral Health (BH), Emergency Department (ED), Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and some post-procedural areas based on census and staffing needs.
- Unit ratio: 1 nurse to 6 patients
- Bed size: 130
- Telemetry duties including reading EKG/ECG rhythm strips and dysrhythmia reads.
- Experience with drips: heparin, insulin, lasix, amiodarone, diltiazem, digoxin.
- Electronic Medical Record system: EPIC.
- Work 36-40 hours/week with overtime billable after 40 hours.
- Required to work 1-2 of 3 summer holidays (Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day) unless the unit is closed.
- Orientation duration: 16 hours.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 24 months of experience in Progressive Care, Stepdown, Med Surg, Telemetry, or combined Med Surg/Telemetry.
- Must be able to confidently read EKG/ECG and perform all telemetry-related duties.
- Proficiency with specified drips (heparin, insulin, lasix, amiodarone, diltiazem, digoxin).
- Active Registered Nurse license in Iowa or compact/multistate license at time of application.
- Current ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification from AHA or ARC.
- Current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification from AHA or ARC.
- Skills checklist specific to Progressive Care, Stepdown, Med Surg, or Telemetry discipline.
- Valid driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications
- De-escalation certificate (SAMA, MAB, MOAB, CPI) – can be obtained during onboarding.
- NIH Stroke Scale certificate – can be obtained during onboarding.
- Professional references or performance evaluations within the last 24 months.
Additional Information
- First-time travelers accepted with at least 2 years of nursing experience; hospital or medical center experience prioritized.
- Must complete Basic Dysrhythmia Assessment with a passing score of 80% during onboarding.
- Call back and on-call pay available (details not included here).
- Nurse will have no permanent home unit and must be flexible to float as needed.
- Employee separation policy restricts travel assignments within the same market if previously employed within the last 12 months.
