Description
Labor and Delivery Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)
Location: Charleston, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Overview
- Work schedule: 3 or 4 shifts per week, 12-hour day shifts (7:00 AM – 7:30 PM), weekdays with every other weekend required
- Must be able to float to Mother Baby unit as needed (only if not needed on Labor & Delivery)
- Assignment can be 40 hours per week if full-time hours desired
- Unit includes low-risk and high-risk obstetrics with 14 L&D beds, 6 triage beds, 2 ORs, 2 recovery beds, and 2 high-risk antepartum beds
- Team collaboration with midwives and physicians to support childbirth experiences ranging from minimal intervention to major complications
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in West Virginia
- Minimum 2 years of Labor and Delivery experience, including experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Certifications:
- BLS (Basic Life Support) issued by the American Heart Association
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
- Skills and experience:
- Circulating experience in the OR setting
- Fetal Heart Monitoring (FHM) experience
- Triage skills
- Scrub skills (a plus)
- Experience with Cerner electronic health record system
Scheduling & Work Conditions
- No blocked schedule requests allowed
- Weekend shifts required every other weekend
- Float to Mother Baby unit as needed
- Flu vaccination required during flu season (Oct 1 – Mar 31) unless medically or religiously exempt with approved documentation
- COVID-19 vaccination is not required
- Fit testing for approved masks required prior to start; candidates may need to travel up to 100 miles for fit testing
- Scrub color: Royal Blue
Facility & System Requirements
- Experience with Cerner electronic health record system required
- Familiarity with Surginet and Fetallink documentation systems preferred
Health & Compliance Requirements
- Physical exam within 1 year of start, signed by a licensed provider, confirming good health and no physical limitations
- Negative TB test within 3 months of start (2-step skin test or preferred QGold/TSpot) or negative chest X-ray if positive TB history
- Tdap vaccination required (given after age 11); medical or religious exemptions require approval
- Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) immunity required via vaccination or positive titers; boosters required if titers negative or equivocal
- Varicella immunity required via vaccination or positive titers; boosters required if titers negative or equivocal
- Hepatitis B vaccination or immunity documentation required; must complete series if no prior immunity
- Drug screen within 30 days of start, including a comprehensive panel (amphetamines, barbiturates, cocaine, opiates, PCP, benzodiazepines, methadone, propoxyphene)
- Annual flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season
- Annual fit testing for N95 masks (3M N95 1860 Small or Regular and Aura 9205 only); PAPR accommodations available if fit test failed due to facial hair or face shape
Background & Screening
- 7-year criminal background check within 30 days of start, including SSN trace, county, sex offender, national, and international searches if applicable
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start, updated annually (completed independently)
- Sex offender search within 30 days of start, updated annually
Testing & Competency
- Pass/fail testing required for nursing candidates only, including:
- EKG exam
- Medication calculation exam
- Blood administration test
- Medication/pharmacology competency exam required, with up to 3 attempts allowed before needing approval for a reset
- Color blindness testing required prior to start
- Annual skills checklist for specialty required
Additional Notes
- Permanent employees cannot return as travelers for 2 years after last permanent day worked at this facility
- Local radius rule: candidates must be outside a 100-mile radius; exceptions for 75-99 miles considered case-by-case
- Orientation is 2 days (Thursday and Friday) and includes Cerner Infusion Management training
- Candidates must review and acknowledge facility policies including dress code, blood administration, math calculation for medication administration, and EKG review (if applicable) prior to start
- Candidates must complete required inservice training modules approximately 1 week before start (estimated 4 hours)
- Flu vaccination is mandatory during flu season with strict compliance deadlines; onsite vaccination available at no cost
This position is ideal for experienced Labor & Delivery RNs comfortable with high-acuity obstetrics, flexible scheduling including weekend shifts, and working in a tertiary care regional unit with a strong emphasis on teamwork and patient-centered care.
