Description
Registered Nurse (RN) – PCU/Med Surg/Oncology
Location: Omaha, Nebraska
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Days (12-hour shifts)
Hours per Week: 48 hours
Unit: 6 East – PCU, Oncology, and MedSurg
Number of Beds: 27-28
Patient Population: Adults
Job Details
- Patient care focus on Oncology PCU and Trauma PCU with a mixed Med/Surg patient population.
- Common diagnoses include oncology and trauma patients.
- Nurse-to-patient ratios:
- PCU: 1:4 (days)
- Med/Surg: 1:5 (days)
- Nights: 1:5-6 patients
- Float assignments within same level of care units (PCU and Med/Surg).
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend, self-scheduling available.
- Nursing assistant support and charge nurse present.
- Additional unit support includes PT/OT, RN case manager, social work, educator, and dietician.
- Scrubs color: Navy Blue.
Required Certifications & Competencies
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
- ONS/ONCC certification preferred but not required (chemotherapy certification preferred).
- Competency in ventilator care and hemodynamic monitoring (CVP, A-line, Swan-Ganz, EV-1000), ICP monitoring; training provided in real time.
- Experience with IV pumps (Alaris) and specialty equipment such as Lyko lifts and other lift devices.
Experience Requirements
- Minimum 1 year of RN experience in PCU, Med Surg, or Oncology.
- Oncology and PCU experience preferred.
- First-time travel nurses are welcome; prior travel experience is not required.
- Minimum 1 year of charge nurse experience required if applying for charge nurse role.
Clinical Skills & Responsibilities
- RNs are required to titrate drips occasionally, including insulin and cardizem.
- Common medications and drips include chemotherapy agents, heparin, cardizem, and protonix.
- Patient care includes oncology patients from diagnosis through remission or end-of-life care.
- Emphasis on hourly rounding and patient experience.
Orientation & Evaluation
- Orientation period: 2 days.
- Pass/fail exam during orientation (open book, 90% required to pass). Failure results in contract termination.
Additional Requirements & Policies
- Must have a valid driver’s license at time of submission.
- Candidates must live within a 50-mile radius of the facility and cannot be currently employed full-time, part-time, or PRN with any associated facilities.
- Artificial nails are prohibited in all patient care areas; refusal to comply will result in contract termination.
- EPIC EMR experience within the last 6 months is preferred but not mandatory.
- Return to work (RTO) required within 7 days or less from contract start; no extensions allowed.

- 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM (some overlap with night shifts)
Requirements / Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Nebraska
- Minimum 1 year of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) / Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- ACLS certification
- NIHSS certification
- ONS or ONCC certification
- Valid driver’s license
- Oncology nursing experience
