Registered Nurse (RN) – Med Surg

Location: Peru, Illinois
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
Hours per Day: 12
Hours per Week: 36

Unit Overview

• Med Surg unit with two pods: 2 South (18 beds) and 3 South (22 beds)
• Nurse-to-patient ratios:

  • Days: 1:5
  • Nights: 1:5-6
• Patient types include medical acute conditions such as pneumonia, heart failure, sepsis, COPD, urologic issues, surgical cases (including total joints and general surgery), and occasional pediatric respiratory illness
• RNs monitor telemetry strips with virtual central telemetry monitoring (Phillips system)
• Respiratory equipment includes BiPAP (home regimen, stable patients) and high-flow oxygen; RNs troubleshoot but do not titrate drips
• Charge nurse and administrative supervisor present each shift; charge nurse takes 1-2 patients
• Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) support nursing care with ratios:

  • Days: 1:8-10
  • Evenings: 1:9-10
  • Nights: 1:10-12
• Teamwork and communication with PCTs emphasized, including regular touchpoints (3x daily) focusing on nursing care tasks such as Foley care, CHG bathing, and oral care

Required Certifications & Qualifications

• Active Illinois RN license or proof of application initiation
• BLS (AHA) and ACLS (AHA) required; PALS preferred
• At least 2 years of nursing experience preferred
• Previous travel nursing experience preferred but not required
• Must pass a comprehensive drug screen (drug-free campus policy)

Scheduling & Time Off

• 12-hour night shifts
• Weekend work every other weekend
• Holiday rotation required (holidays include Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Day, and their eves for night shifts)
• Low census call off policy: 12 hours off every 13 weeks with no penalty; call off reevaluated every 4 hours
• Non-billable orientation: 12 hours (usually 3 shifts) on unit-specific orientation

Additional Information

• Floating may be required to ICU for general acute overflow or to a nearby campus (25 miles away) with at least 2 hours’ notice
• Dress code: solid color scrubs only, no prints; scrubs not provided
• Emphasis on collaboration and communication within the care team to ensure quality patient care and adherence to plan of care
