Description

Registered Nurse (RN) - PACU (Peri Anesthesia)

Location

  • Lewiston, Maine

Employment Type

  • Travel assignment

Contract Length

  • 13 weeks

Work Schedule

  • 4x9 shifts (four 9-hour shifts per week)
  • Variable shifts between 5:00 AM and 8:00 PM
  • Average of 6-8 on-call shifts per 6-week block, including weekends and holidays
  • Approximately one weekend shift every 5-6 weeks
  • 36 guaranteed hours per week

Unit and Patient Population

  • Peri Anesthesia unit with 19 pre-op/same day surgery beds and 12 Phase I PACU beds (both required)
  • Patient ratio approximately 2:1
  • Patient population includes all ages (pediatric, adult, geriatric)
  • Trauma Level III facility

Required Certifications

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)

Clinical Skills and Competencies

  • Arterial line management
  • Dysrhythmia recognition and management
  • Care for a wide range of surgical procedures including general, orthopedic, vascular, cardiac, urology, plastics, thoracic, ENT, bariatrics, and oncology surgeries
  • Blood product administration
  • Central line and PICC line care and management
  • Phlebotomy and IV starts
  • Administration of emergency medications, antiarrhythmics, anticoagulants, antihypertensives, IV vasopressors, narcotics/analgesics, and procedural sedation
  • Management of ventilated patients, chest tubes, fresh tracheostomy care, and airway assessment
  • Interpretation of ABGs and lab values
  • Placement of oral/nasal airways
  • Conscious sedation, epidural, general, local anesthesia, monitored anesthesia care (MAC), nerve blocks, spinal anesthesia
  • Pain assessment and management including PCA pump use
  • Stroke scale and circulation checks
  • Wound vac management
  • Isolation precautions and malignant hyperthermia protocols
  • Medication reconciliation
  • Obtaining 12 lead EKGs and operative/procedural consents
  • Pre-op assessment, education, and review of history and physical
  • Straight urinary catheterization (male and female)
  • Richmond Agitation Sedation Scale (RASS) monitoring

Preferred Experience

  • Trauma Level II experience
  • Teaching hospital experience
  • Previous charge nurse experience
  • Experience with Cerner and Omnicell systems
  • Experience with gastric bypass and sleeve surgeries, bariatrics
  • Pulmonary artery line/Swan Ganz monitoring
  • Pacemaker insertion
  • Post cath lab procedures and sheath pull
  • Insulin protocols
  • Extubation, LMA/ET, intubation
  • Pre/post cath lab, endoscopy, and interventional radiology procedures

  • Electronic Health Record (EHR) system: Epic
  • Scrub color provided; navy blue allowed if permitted by SDS
  • Float requirements are rare

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Maine
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Minimum 2 years of RN experience in Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), with PACU experience within the last year
  • Current ACLS, BLS, and PALS certifications
  • Experience in both inpatient and outpatient settings
