Description

Registered Nurse – MedSurg

Location: Franklin, Indiana
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Overview

  • Medical Surgical nursing position in a mid-size hospital (34 beds)
  • 12-hour shifts: Days (6:00 AM – 6:30 PM) and Nights (6:00 PM – 6:30 AM)
  • Weekend rotation required: approximately 4 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule
  • Holiday rotation based on calendar
  • Self-scheduling available depending on census and staffing
  • Possible on-call requirement if shift is cancelled, with 45-minute return time

Patient Population & Unit Details

  • Common diagnoses: Pneumonia (PNA), COPD, CHF, orthopedic cases (shoulders, hips, knees), appendectomy, cholecystectomy, diverticulitis, bowel resection, pancreatitis
  • Nurse-to-patient ratios:
    • Day shift: 1:5
    • Night shift: 1:6
  • Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) support both shifts with a max ratio of 1:12
  • Remote telemetry monitoring available; MS nurses are not responsible for strip interpretation
  • Charge nurse available on both shifts; house supervisor available on nights
  • Floating within MedSurg scope of practice

Required Certifications & Skills

  • BLS (AHA)
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • Experience in MedSurg, PCU, Telemetry, or CCU required
  • No requirement for RNs to titrate drips; common drip includes Heparin per protocol

Orientation & Scheduling

  • Unit-specific orientation: 1 shift of clinical nursing education plus 2 shifts on unit with preceptor
  • Orientation schedule: 3 consecutive 12-hour shifts, no blocked scheduling requests

Additional Information

  • Dress code: Navy blue scrubs
  • Respiratory equipment on unit includes chronic BiPAP and CPAP devices

  • Registered Nurse license appropriate for Indiana
